Guillen Wants Thome in the Leadoff Spot

This is just hilarious. Putting Jim Thome in the leadoff spot? But he DOES have a point. How can Jerry Owens be a leadoff man and have a .249 average, and a .293 on-base percentage? That is ridiculous. You should've made some moves around the trade deadline, Guillen. That way, you wouldn't be battling for FOURTH place, and wouldn't be humiliating yourself and the game by putting someone who almost has 500 home runs in the leadoff spot, because you just want to give him more at-bats.

At this point, in my opinion, I don't really think it matters. I mean they ARE in last/fourth place. They have nothing to lose, except maybe for Ozzie Guillen's dignity, if it isn't already lost. If he wants to put Thome in the leadoff spot, it's HIS decision, but he might want to run it by Ken Williams, so he ensures that he doesn't get fired for making a stupid decision.

At the point in the season that they would have made a move I dont think that Guillen's opinion mattered much Romi. He couldve asked for any backup lead off hitter in baseball and they probably wouldve laughed at him. I wouldnt place the blame on Ozzie for this fault (although one of many).

When it comes to making moves at the deadline Romie, wouldn't that have been Williams's job in the first place? He sat on his hands, the most I saw him try to do was see if he could move Podsednik after the non waiver deadline.

No one wants Contreras (who lost his 16th today to the Royals). He had a chance to move Dye and passed on that, then gave him a 2 year 22 mil extension. Buerhle was the lone marketable asset he had left, and he locked him up and gave a no trade clause.

The ChiSox are doomed, and there is not a damn thing even Hawk Harrelson can do to help them.

Yeah, you guys are probably right. Ken Williams is an idiot. I mean, he gave away Iguchi for someone hardly anyone knows, except for Phillies fans (since he's a Phillies Minor Leaguer), but I just don't understand why Guillen would do this. I mean, does he want to ruin his reputation even more?

As far as Guillen goes, he and the coaches should've worked a lot more with them. They had a lot of talent to begin with. They lost Podsednik and Crede...OK. You've got Dye, who had an amazing year last year... Iguchi, they got rid of him, Pierzynski, he's an F'in A-hole, but he still did all right; he couldn't have been an all star without earning it; Uribe, an OK player, but I think the drugs he was supposedly taking may have affected him negatively; Thome: Close to 500 homers, a great power hitter; Konerko: Really good first baseman; and then you got Owens. If he sucks, WORK WITH HIM!! Make him better. If he still sucks, try to get him on a hot streak so that other teams might want him when his contract is up or before another trade deadline in the future.

They need pitching, like you said Silencer. But if you're worse than the Royals, especially in this decade, you're really bad, and I mean, REALLY bad!!

Why not give it a try? From an OBP standpoint, Thome's their best option. Plus the "leadoff man" is only guaranteed to lead off in the first inning. From the second inning on, anyone in the order could be the leadoff man. This season's a lost cause, why not try something a little radical?

This season is loss, but you do not want to lose next season. At this point, you are evaluating players for the future and batting Thome in the leadoff spot does not accomplish anything. Guillen would only be doing this so Thome has a better chance of reaching 500 homeruns. Let's hope that Guillen will not actually put an individual first before the team. Right now should be a time to try Danny Richard, Jerry Owens, or anyone else at the leadoff spot. This way, you can determine if one of your own guys will be ready to hit at the top of the lineup next year, or if you need to bring someone in from outside the organization to fill that spot.

Ozzie Guillen making a "new-school" move? Whatever happened to Scott Podsednik? If he actually does this, he will regain a little respect in my mind... Jim Thome is the White Sox's best hitter, so why not try to get him as many at-bats as possible? Too logical?

Thome has hit only 4 home runs since the 24th of July and needs 7 more to reach 500 home run plateau so he may need those extra at bats.

I like Owens a lot -- he's speedy and has great potential and a good attitude. He should lead off for now and (hopefully) have a chance to get better; it's not like the Sox have much to lose at the moment. Of course, I'd rather have Scotty Pods leading off, but considering that his ribs are made of glass, we just can't count on that. I wouldn't be surprised if Ozzie is just talking shit to stir people up.

You've heard of Manny being Manny? Well, this is Ozzie being Ozzie. Just because his team caught lightning in a bottle and had one lucky as hell season where everything bounced their way, Ozzie thinks he's a good manager. And he's snowed the rest of the baseball establishment into thinking so as well.

That was back when their starting pitching was actually good. Remember Contreras' 8-0 streak. Buehrle, Garland, etc. Rowand, Podsednik, Thome, Konerko, Crede, Dye, Pierzynski...all healthy and well..
