Guillen Opens Mouth, Inserts Foot

12
Vote

It his most recent tirade, Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen responded to an article in the Chicago Sun-Times criticizing Guillen's handling of the Sean Tracey incident, where the pitcher did not intentionally retaliate and hit another player. Specifically, Guillen responded to the article, written by Jay Mariotti, by stating “What a piece of [expletive] he is, [expletive] fag."

In response, fellow sports writer Greg Couch, also of the Sun-Times, wrote an article requesting that MLB commissioner Bud Selig suspend Guillen. Meanwhile, Guillen does not see the issue with his choice of language, claiming that in his country, this is typical and acceptable.

Ozzie Guillen, very classy. I've said it before. He's got a great head for the game and the fire you want to see from a manager, but he's got to watch his mouth. He is heading down the wrong path and I see trouble coming soon...

Suspend Ozzie for what? Bud he has enough potential suspensions coming down the pike becuase of HGH and the Bonds investigation. He does not need to suspend Ozzie. This is America after all. Remember FREE SPEECH does exist.

In Ozzie's defense, Jay Mariotti really is a piece of $%^!. He could be a fag, not that there's anything wrong with that.

MLB shouldn't fire him for that, The White Sox should. How can you accept that as an organization?

Well the owner, Jerry Reinsdorf, feels exactly the same way as Guillen. Ozzie should probably have left out the fag comment, but generally he can get away with saying that about Mariotti in Chicago cuz the entire city of Chicago feels that way about Mariotti.

Didn't Ozzie lead the White Sox to the promise land last year?

No. The White Sox players lead the White Sox to the World Series. Ozzie just sat along for the ride.

I have to admit, I have thought Ozzie's tirades were fun and enjoyable, sort of in a Mark Cuban sort of way, but this one pretty much took it a little far.

I say: let the market place of ideas handle this. If this is so wrong, don't buy tickets to White Sox games, or watch them on TV.

Then why is this bothering you? You are not paying his salary. Ozzie is speaking his opinion, which is permitted under the First Amendment of the United States Constitution.

That comment is definitely uncalled for...the whole deal with Tracy I understand from Ozzie's point of view, but no need to air the dirty laundry for all to see. The whole retaliation thing is an almost unsaid and tacit thing, but now it's out in the open which is only gonna invite public opinion on it.

So the question becomes: do you want to hear what people really think, or do you want them to hide their true feelings. Suspending people and telling them not to talk will not solve the problem.

Ozzie is not exercising free speech. He is being paid by the White Sox to represent the organization and MLB.

So you don't want Ozzie to state what he truly thinks. You want him to state things that the Chicago White Sox want him to say. Yeah, we are heading down a slippery slope quickly here.

If it is a strategy session, then yes I do. I would be doing a dis-service if I do not speak my mind candidly to my clients. Heck, to do otherwise would be a breach of my professional responsibilities.

I can't imagine you could walk into a meeting with a client and talk about a competitor as "What a piece of [expletive] he is, [expletive] fag."

Guys I'm not defending him but Ozzie does acutlally think it's totally acceptable. You have to we realize we are one a few countries that aren't still homophobic. His country as many countries in South Central America do look down upon gays. And even jokes in the locker room of the whole team being fags all the time. He says it and doesn't think twice, it's like an assmption that no one is. That's jsut Ozzie Guillen. ...Though I'd love for the White Sox to acquire a 6'3 250 pound monster whose Gay and see Ozzie say that...

I agree. He's been in the US for 25 years. It's not like this was a cultural thing that would be beyond his comprehension. And again, it's not just the fact that he used that word. As a coach, you don't use slurs to go after sports writers. You just don't. Any other word he could have substituted for what he used wouldn't have been acceptable, either.

On a lighter note, I did enjoy the reasons that Guillen gave to prove he is not homophobic: Guillen also told Couch that he has gay friends, attends WNBA games, went to a Madonna concert and plans to go to the Gay Games in Chicago.

I totally agree with what the guys on PTI were saying about this. I don't think Guillen meant the word in an offensive way towards homosexuals. However, using that word in a disparaging way IS inherently offensive, regardless of how he meant it. They pointed out that his statements about what it means in "his country" is without merit, because he became a US citizen and has been living in the US for 25 years. Furthermore, it's not just the slur. It's the way he's calling out Mariotti. It wouldn't have been okay if he'd called him a mother-(bleeper), either. Baseball needs to suspend him in a way it will hurt him. And they need to fine him in a way that will hurt him. He keeps doing this stuff, and they need to show him that it might be fun and games to him, but baseball won't tolerate it.
