Griffey Deserves All-Time Best Billing

Here is a spattering of comments from The Sporting News.com forum, which I find typical, concerning Ken Griffey Jr. and the "What Could Have Been" scenario:

> ...Ken Griffey Jr. has the most beautiful swing in baseball. He has used it with tremendous power over the past decade and a half but he had a potential for much, much more. wvthundr [1] >

> ..Still one of the greatest outfielders though. Will unfortunately go down as one of the "how good would he have REALLY been" stories... hotlanta25 [2] >

> ...If it weren't for Griffey's injury problems I could easily have seen him on pace to either break Aaron's record this year or next. It's a shame that he had to go through all the problems he has had because when he is healthy he is still as deadly as ever. tbeals7 [3] >

> It's sad to think about the talent being wasted by injuries with Junior Griffey... MFazio23 [4]

You get the idea, and I know you have heard it all before. I think this is the wrong way to evaluate Griffey. Unfortunately for him, he has had the bad luck to have his misfortunes at the end of his career instead of the beginning. I rarely hear anyone saying, "Well, Sandy Koufax would have been one of the best ever if it weren't for those first six years of his career." (In which he averaged six wins and a 4.04 ERA.)

Sure, Griffey might be pushing his way further up all-time lists if injuries had not come calling. But is anyone claiming Jim Brown is not one of the best, if not the best, football players ever because he only played nine years? Ken Griffey Jr. is one of the best baseball players ever. Period.

As a Reds fan I regret not getting Griffey's best years here in Cincinnati. That said, he had enough "best years" in Seattle (and has been nowhere near a "bad" player, when healthy, in Cincinnati) to easily be considered with Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, and Ted Williams on the short list of greatest outfielders of all-time. In fact, when the All-Century team was announced in 1999 Griffey was the only active position player who made the starting lineup. (Griffey finished 8th. Barry Bonds? 18th. And remember, Griffey is five years younger than Bonds.)

Has Griffey become a worse player since 1999? Much less so than Willie Mays was with the Mets. Stop the, "Well, he could have had 700 HR by now" talk. Ted Williams could have had some insane numbers had the Japanese not bombed Pearl Harbor. Babe Ruth might not have had the numbers he put up had baseball been integrated. (That topic is for another day...)

I understand discussions such as this - comparing eras, who's the best and who's a bum, etc. - are why sports talk radio exists and are near-and-dear topics of sports fans everywhere, including myself. The four letter network appears to revel in this inanery lately with their Who's Now and top 50 future football Hall of Famer shenanigans.

Stop evaluating Griffey on what coulda-shoulda-woulda been. At age 30 Ken Griffey Jr. was one of the greatest players of all-time. Today, at age 38, he is still one of the greatest players of all-time. And my oh my, what a swing....

I agree with your statements. I'm so sick of people saying he could've done this. Let's forget about his injury and look at the present. He COULD HAVE broken Hank Aaron's record. So what? It seems like everyone except Neifi Perez is gonna break the record.

Let's look at what he can still get, even though he missed most 2002-2004, and if he's still healthy:

He can still get 500 doubles (45 people have done this), and he currently has 463.

He can still get 600 home runs (and he will; only 5 people have done this) and he currently has 589.

He is still in the Top 25 in SLG.(Even Hank Aaron is not in the Top 25)

He has over 1500 runs scored. 64 people have done this. He will be in the top 50 in runs scored when his career ends (only 14 runs away from doing that).

He WILL be in the Top 20 in RBIS (currently has 1677) and is 18 away from doing that.

He is also 489 hits shy of 3000. I don't know if he will do that, but we'll see.

Fact of the matter is, everyone talks about the past and what he could've done, like you said, but I believe he will be in the top 20 players of all time when his career is over..

Griffey in his prime still wasn't better than A-Rod or Bonds in his prime. He's certainly an all-time great, but not quite Mays/Aaron/Williams great. http://bpcat...-player.html

He's no AROD, I'll tell you that, and when you talk about prime here, look at Griffey's, A-Rod's, and Bonds' best years:

AROD: 133 runs scored, 201 hits, 52 HRs, 135 RBIs, 18 SBs, .318 AVG, .399 OBP, .622 SLG

Bonds: 129 runs scored, 156 hits, 73 HRs, 137 RBIs, 13 SBs, .328 AVG, .515 OBP, .863 SLG

Griffey Jr: 125 runs scored, 185 hits, 56 HRs, 147 RBIs, 15 SBs, .304 AVG, .382, OBP .646 SLG

You wanna know the ages of each of those years? ARod was 25, Griffey was 27 and Bonds was 36. WOW. 36!! What a "prime" that is for his age. I'd say AROD's and Griffey's were about the same. I'm not even going to talk about Bonds because we all know what he did...

Sorry, dude, you apparently never saw Griffey in his prime. He was definitely better than both. Barry cheated, and ARod is an infielder.

Still lots of time for Griffey. Just because Aaron is out of reach, that doesn't mean a healthy HOF career isn't.

Griffey will be a first ballot HOFer. Right now the only question is how many idiot voters don't vote for him because they never vote anyone in on the first ballot.

Junior needs to hit another 150 home runs and get 3,000 hits before he can considered the best of all-time.

I don't think he's ever gonna be conidered to be the best of all time. If this was the '90s, I'd say he MIGHT...just MIGHT have a chance. IMO, one can beat Babe Ruth, but that's just me...

Best outfielder, I'd say he's up there. Babe Ruth wasn't a good outfielder, just a good hitter and a decent pitcher...

I'll give you "one of" the all-time best, but not "the" all-time best. He's a great player, and perhaps the most talented player of all-time. He's gotten unlucky with some injuries, and also hasn't had the opportunity to play on too many solid teams.

Throw out Bonds' numbers after the 1999 season, which was reportedly when he started juicing. Compare Griffey's stats in the 1990's. Griffey was by far the superior player. In the pre-roid years, Bonds hit over 45HR 1 time, Griffey did it 5 times. He may not be the best player of all-time, but he is at least in the discussion. He will be the most underrated truly spectacular player of all time because of the steroid era. If you are forming an all-time team, its picking apples and oranges with him Mays and Mantle to start in Center.

I don't really think that's true...for the 90's, Bonds' WARP was above 10 every year except the strike season, while Griffey's was only three times (and he never topped 10.6, while Bonds' high was 14.4). Bonds has a 50-point edge in OBP pretty much every year that decade, and is probably a little ahead in SLG% as well. I know Griffey played center, but Bonds was a really good defender back then, albeit at a lesser position.

And just to throw in a qualitative argument. I'm 23 years old. He's the best player that I have ever seen.

Whatever people think about him, he still has the best swing in baseball. I could watch him swing all day.

Well even pre-1998, Bonds had better average, OBP, than Griffey. Plus was 3-1 in MVP category, which is impressive since Bonds has always been an ass yet he still got voted for 3 MVP's means he really earned it. Also walked more and struck out less.

In my opinion, here are the outfielders that are better than Griffey:

Ty Cobb, Willie Mays, Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio, Joe Jackson, Cool Papa Bell, Mickey Mantle, and Tris Speaker.

Ken Griffey Jr. is a great player, one of the best of his era, but one of the best all-time? Not in my book.

Nicely said, Rawbeezeitz. No love for Rickey Henderson though? 3000+ hits, 1406 SBs, 297 homers and he's a leadoff hitter.

Griffey is clearly a hall of famer, there's no debate about it. However to ignore the ridiculousness of what he could have done if healthy is silly. By saying man it's a shame imagine what he could have done if he stayed healthy, doesn't really degrade what he's done, so much as comment on his potential. It also expresses the regret we have in not getting to see him for those long period of time. One of the best things to watch in baseball was/is Griffey Jr swinging the bat. Conversely one of the sadder things has been watching him brake his wrist, fall to the ground with leg injuries etc. I appreciate all he's done, but i still wish we'd gotten a chance to watch him really live out his potential.

Griffey is one of the ten best outfielders in history. Rawbeezeitz has him under a few that I got to see in person. He was a better outfielder than Aaron and Cobb and even Dimaggio but the rest without question were better in almost all aspects of the game. He runs better than Williams, Bell and Speaker and maybe had a better arm. These are different eras being compared and in some areas they can be and in other they can't. Jackson and Mantle were in their primes the best outfielders I have ever seen but Ruth is so close and was a better hitter not just power hitter than Mantle and the difference between Jackson and Ruth is so small only difference I can see here is power. Jackson's average speaks for itself the highest in history and I will say here and now that Shoeless Joe Jackson was a better hitter and player than Ty Cobb. Better arm maybe not as good on the bases but Cobb's rep on the bases is overdone. Griffey without all the injuries maybe would have ranked higher in a lot of stats but he still is one of the best to every play the game.
