[edit] Biography

Gregg Jefferies (Gregory Scott Jefferies) was born on August 1, 1967 in Burlingame, California. He made his Major League debut on September 6, 1987 for the New York Mets. In 1989, his rookie year, he hit .258 with 12 home runs and 56 RBI. Jefferies played for the New York Mets, Kansas City Royals, St. Louis Cardinals, Philadelphia Phillies, Anaheim Angels and Detroit Tigers over the course of his 13 year career.

Most people believe that Gregg Jefferies's best season was 1993, when he slugged 16 home runs, stole 46 bases, hit for a .342 average and knocked in 83 runs.

The Mets selected Jefferies in the first round of the 1985 Amateur Draft, using the 20th overall pick. He was named Minor League Player of the Year for both 1986 and 1987, and made his Mets debut in September of '87 at the age of 19. Many Mets fans, seeing him as the Next Great Thing, were clamoring for him to join the big club permanently, but he was blocked at third base by Howard Johnson and second by an effective Wally Backman/Tim Teufel platoon.

By August of 1988, though, Jefferies was in the bigs to stay. He hit .321 during his call-up, and the Mets traded Backman to the Minnesota Twins during the off-season.

However, the Jefferies never reached his superstar hype-status, with his Mets career peaking in 1990 when he lead the National League with 40 doubles. After being maligned in the press for being a prima donna, in 1991, Jefferies wrote an "open letter" to sports-talk radio station WFAN, stating his case:

When a pitcher is having trouble getting players out, when a hitter is having trouble hitting, or when a player makes an error, I try to support them in whatever way I can. I don't run to the media to belittle them or to draw more attention to their difficult times. I can only hope that one day those teammates who have found it convenient to criticize me will realize that we are all in this together. If only we can concentrate more on the games than complaining and bickering and pointing fingers, we would all be better off.

This, naturally, did nothing to help his cause. Indeed, it sealed his fate in Queens, as he was traded to the Kansas City Royals as part of the deal which netted Bret Saberhagen for the Mets.

In 1993, Jefferies was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals, where he would have his two best seasons, batting .342 and .325, respectively, while finding a home at first base and being named to the National League All-Star team in both the 1993 and 1994 seasons. Jefferies hit free agency after the 1994 season. Even though the Cardinals wanted to keep Jefferies on the roster, they refused to give him a no-trade clause. Instead, Jefferies signed a four year, $19.5 million contract with the Philadelphia Phillies. His non-descript career as a Philly was cap-stoned by a deadline trade to the Anaheim Angels, where he he hit .347 in 19 games -- with no walks.

In the 1998 off-season, Jefferies signed a two year deal with the Detroit Tigers, netting him $4.5 million in the process. His thumb chronically bothering him, Jefferies was reduced to a part-time role, and hit a mere 8 home runs and drove in a paltry 32 runs over his two seasons in Detroit.

After the 2000 season, at age 32, Jefferies hung them up.
