Green Bay Packers 35, New York Giants 13

by Cheezer

The Green Bay Packers traveled into the Meadowlands and sent the Giants fans packing early. The Packers pass offense dominated a suspect Giants pass defense to the tune of 286 yards and 3 touchdowns via the air. Green Bay converted 55% of their 3rd down opportunities and had 25 first downs total as the Giants proved unable to contain the offense in the second half. The Packers only had 10 first downs against the Eagles in week 1.

By midway through the fourth quarter, half the crowd had left the stadium. That’s not something you see in Green Bay. No matter how bad it gets, Packers fans stick with the team until the end.

The Giants showed that they had a good plan going in as they led the game 10-7 at the half. After adjustments, the Packers came out and outscored the Giants 28-3 in the second half. Once the Packers got the lead, the defense was able to slip into their Man-2 defensive package (according to Troy Aikman). This defensive alignment works well in a leading situation because the defensive line can focus on the pass rush allowing the team to drop 7 into coverage and completely shut down the passing lanes. During the “Rally” stretch of the 4th quarter, Green Bay held Jeremy Shockey without a reception in 3 tries. This was crucial to closing the door on the Giants.

Brett Favre let his veteran savvy show. According to sources, Favre went to the line with either a run-pass option or a pass-pass option. Both DeShawn Wynn touchdowns as well as the Donald Driver touchdown came on Favre audibles.

Observations

  • Mason Crosby missed his first NFL field goal. That’s good. Everyone misses and I’m glad he got it out of the way.
  • New kick returner Tramon Williams showed decisiveness and explosiveness with two returns of over 40 yards (1 negated by penalty).
  • DeShawn Wynn is the best option at RB right now. 10 carries for 50 yards, 2 TDs. Long carry of 38 yards.
  • The Packers running game is in dire need of help. (See next observation.)
  • The Packer OL tends to implode upon occasion and leave people completely unblocked.
  • Packers TEs scored two touchdowns. This is an aspect of the red zone offense that has been missing for the last couple of seasons.
  • Favre had his second interception of the season on a pass that bounced off of Donald Driver into the arms of the DB. In my opinion, both Favre interceptions this season could have been prevented by better play from the receivers.
  • Along the same line, Favre had another interception opportunity dropped by the defensive player. That makes two of these in two weeks as well.
  • The Packer secondary had numerous infractions for holding or interference. By my count AJ Hawk had 3 (1 declined) and Al Harris had 2. I'll know for certain after I study the film.
  • The defense showed unity and fire as they did not tolerate any after-the-play activity from the Giants and came to each other’s defense. It did lead to some penalties though.
  • The Packer run defense made Derrick Ward look like a pro-bowler as he went 15 carries for 90 yds (6.0 ypc)
  • Brett Favre Record Chase
    • Now the all-time record holder for NFL victories with 149
    • Three TD passes put him within 3 of tying Dan Marino for most in a career (420).
    • Four more interceptions and he will be the all-time leader for a career.

We’ll see how good this undefeated Green Bay Packer team really is as the San Diego Chargers come to God’s country next Sunday.

Not a bad game, but this is the Giants your talking about. If the Packers were to have any chance at beating the Chargers, now would be the best oppertunity for them to do so

Exactly I cannot tell if the Packers are better than I thought, or are the Giants even worse than I thought

If they can beat the Chargers, it will be kicking them while their down. It could happen, but it won't be the same as taking them down

Two comments:

1) Wynn's touchdown was not a commentary on his skill. He was untouched until he hit the secondary, and maybe threw in one juke. That was the 38 yarder. I think there was a big block thrown by Driver -- not sure, I'd have to watch the tape (heh) -- but basically, it was all blocking, not rushing, that got him that gain. Call it a 5 yard gain and suddenly he's at 10 carries for 17 yards. That's awful.

2) The Eli INT that hit that lineman in the chest had to be one of the worst passes I've ever seen.

The play was designed to go inside and he broke it outside, juked the linebacker at the line, picked up a block and then broke through two DBs before crossing into the endzone. That particular run was pretty good.

Note, however the other 9 carries that gained 12 yards Not exactly the stuff of legend.

I still think that he is the best option they have right now. That's not saying much though. It's kinda like the shiniest penny in the drawer while the rest of the league has quarters.

The run was SO BAD! I was screaming at NFL.com! And then it crashed. :( But thankfully, the Giants D was so bad, it made up for it!

The Giants are Horrendous. The Pack are a good team, I can see them goign 10-6 and making some noise in the Playoffs.

Some observations I made during the game:
  • The Packers D seems to get better the more they're out on the field because of their depth at the line and linebacker.
  • Mason Crosby will someday break the 63-yard record.
  • The receiving corps is tremendously underrated, despite the Giants defense being spotty at best. Brett Favre is able to spread the ball like he did when the Pack went to two Super Bowls, and that's without No. 2 receiver Greg Jennings.
  • Nick Collins needs a little more work at defending deep passes. The Burress touchdown should've been knocked down by a safety and the pass to Shockey that was dropped at the goal line should've been an easy pick but Collins made a lackluster effort even though he did break Shockey's concentration enough for him to mishandle the ball. Needless to say, Al Harris and Charles Woodson were not bailed out often, despite playing tremendous games.

I think Collins has hit his ceiling. He's serviceable, but they need to continue to develop other players for the position. The passing game worked well with the quick slants, etc. Get the ball to the players in space and let them make plays. With the lack of running game, the quick (West Coast style) passing game may be the only way to control the clock.

Giants' secondary is so bad. Favre was picking them to shreads. Our run, however, was oh so bad. The touchdowns were flukes. We need Morency, and some O-line help.

If they had traded for Larry Johnson than the Packers would be by far the NFC's best team. By far.

They still might but it is probably more of a reflection of the NFC than the team itself.

My theory is that T^2 was passing on the available backs, McGahee, Henry, etc. because he wanted Michael Turner. SD, however wanted a 1st rounder for him and T^2 didn't want to go that high.

Also, remember T^2 has a track record that shows he would rather take his chance with young, unproven players and give them a shot than give an older player another chance.

I honestly don't want LJ at the price he was asking back at the draft. Herm almost killed him last season with all the carries. I would be surprised if he remains a top tier back after that much over-use. He's certainly not worth all that money.

I'm not sure what the Giants were doing with their cornerbacks. Sam Madison was playing so far off the line that the Packers just started dumping passes to receivers underneath. And Corey Webster was just the opposite, playing too aggressive and getting burned for big plays. Their new defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo was supposed to love the blitz, but I haven't seen nearly enough of that in the first two games. They aren't getting any pressure on the QB. The Giants only sack Sunday came when Favre was tripped. If you have corners who can't cover and give a QB all day to throw, this is exactly what happens... you get picked apart for 80 points in two weeks.

The Packers man handled the weak Giants defense. They showed that they will be able to score against weaker teams and can run away with games. I like Green Bay as atleast a wild card team in the playoffs. The division race could be the best in the league with all 4 teams having a legit shot at the title.

Funny how the NFC North went from "league's worst division" to "league's best division" in two weeks. The only reason there's a 1-1 team is because they played another North team!

This was early in the season, but you were right there with the rest of the NFL analysts: all picking apart the Packers rush offense. It's funny how things can change in the NFL.
