Greatest Sports Accomplishment

by user Jamel

Another no hitter- congrats Justin Verlander.

This made me think-- what is the greatest sports accomplishment of ALL-

A perfect bowling game (300???), perfect snooker match, winning all majors in golf in one year, doing something in rugby (I don't know tackle someone- whatever), catching 5 large mouth bass in one tournament weighing more than 8 lbs each, landing all your triple sow cow in figure skating???

"A perfect snooker match" i.e. a 147 break has happened about 50 times in its history. You can see the link here.

There are many of these though:

  • A hole in one
  • A 9 dart finish
  • A 147 break
etc.

Yeah, a 147 in snooker hadn't happened until 1955, and there were only a few until the 1980s. But then the table was improved, i.e. thinner cloth, cushions that bounced etc. So now 147s are at a rate of about 1 every couple of months. About as much as a Hole in One I hasten to add, I bet there are at least 6 holes in one on the year on the PGA & European Tours.

I don't think a hole in one is anything special-- it's like scoring a hat trick in hockey--

I have no idea where my comment went Alex but I don't think a hole in one is that big of a deal- don't get me wrong its a rare accomplishment but when my 75 year old black grandma who has played probably 10 X in her life has done it it lost all meaning to me (I've never hit a hole in one). It's just that if anyone can do it- it was the funniest thing I have ever seen- it just doesn't count as a HUGE ACCOMPLISHMENT- screw the hole in one thing

A Hole in one at a major. That'd be amazing...

So you honestly think that a hole in one in golf during the Masters is more of an accomplishment than a no hitter?? As weird as this sounds I would think a nine dart finish would be pretty tough

dude, Agusta is designed so you can't get a Hole in one. Most people couldn't even finish a game on that course, much less hit a hole in one

Yeah, a hole in during the Masters is so remarkable that this guy did it. On the other hand, this guy has never done it...

That's my point--- ANYONE can get a hole in one- even if you really really suck- I beat Manny could get a hole in one.

Johnnie Van Der Meers if I do recall correct. And Jamel, a perfect game is harder then a no hitter.

How about Reggie Jackson hitting three HR's on three consecutive pitches in the World Series? Nobody's ever going to do that again.

Kim Jong Il had six hole in ones on his first 18 holes. Can't be tougher than throwing a perfect game with your natural throwing hand then throwing another perfect game in the second game of the doubleheader with your opposite hand while running a the first two hour marathon, on your hands while juggling (with your feet) flaming chainsaws and sharks covered in flesh eating bacteria to become the first non-equine to win the Triple Crown. On the Moon. Of course, I think winning Le Mans using only reverse would be impressive, too.

winning a Masters with only a snooker stick-thingy...

beating Joey Chesnut in eating hot dogs

Beating Nintendo Contra without up-down-up-down-left-right-b-a-(select - if there's two players) start (or was it two left-rights?)

Remebering game show hosts when they were called comedians...

Reading a sports article with sports content in it that relate to sports...

Getting Jay Mariotti fired... (ArmchairGM can take ALL the credit)

getting Tyrone Briggs to apologize for anything or to admit to ever being wrong

While all those things are technically "Possible" I know one feat that can't be done...

Getting Jamel to shut up... it's the TRUE impossible feat - can't be done.

Glen Hall played 502 consecutive games over 8 seasons in goal for the Redwings and Blackhawks many if not all without a mask.
