Greatest Coach Ever!

12
Vote

by Sergeant Armchair

I have to give this man credit where credit is due. This man is perhaps the greatest god damn coach that I have ever known!

So I ask you Privates who do you think is perhaps the greatest couch that ever lived?

Too bad he didn't coach a real sport

Are you kidding me? Knight was much better than Ditka. Here's why.

Ditka vs. Knight...

Knight's: Most Wins by a college basketball coach Most cusses in a lifetime Most times where a coach pwned an interviewer Most great speeches...

You seem to know a lot about football, so you can give me Ditka's records.

Knight's definitely one of the best college bball has ever seen, up there with Wooden and ::shudders:: Coach K, don't know if he's the greatest ever, though. Gotta go with my boy Belichick, he has gotten more out of less than anyone I have ever seen, but I'm pretty young. Judging coaches is so subjective when you're a fan, because so much of what they do is behind closed doors, so the only thing that we see is the result on the field. It's tough to gauge how much they scheme, work with players, etc. Kudos to Anonymous for the "Sergeant Assmunch" nickname-haven't head that one before. Although it wasn't necessary. And Ditka is not even near the top of NFL coaches.

You forget in the playoffs, he nearly clobbered a photographer to HUG Mangini. And he's said in the past that if he had the opportunity to wear a suit as Mike Nolan did, he would. I don't think we should take personal style into account when judging coaches.

What's the problem with keeping his player's injury status under wraps? As long they're on the list, why does he need to be specific? Fans and reporters would love it if he were, but he isn't. He's just concerned with putting the best team on the field every Sunday, and focusing on who CAN play, not who can't.

I never said he was the best coach ever. I said he's the best at getting the most out of his players that I've ever seen. I'm 20. I'm sure there have been better coaches/motivators/whatever, but I'm just saying, with the amount of his brand of football I have watched, he's the best I've ever seen.

That being said, who do I really think is the best coach ever? Lombardi.

The NFL actually ruled against bill because of those "fake" injuries...I mean...the guy was talking about a "lower body injury"...what the hell is that...

The NFL now requires you to disclose those injuries in some way (there are rules, I have no idea where)...but they were made with Belichick in mind...

Don't get me wrong, i thought it was funny...but the NFL is right, it wasn't very sporting

Even though he is before my time, I gotta go with Coach Lombardi. Master motivator and emotional leader. His values of hard work and dedication help make him my all time favorite. He got the most from his players. His opponents knew what his teams were gonna do and couldn't stop them. His emphasis was on teamwork and execution, not complexity of the playbook.

I don't want to debate the merits of individual NFL coaches because I do respect what Belichick has done in NE (especially in the salary cap era), but you can't consider him unless you also consider his 36-44 record while coaching the Cleveland Browns.

I wouldn't evn put Ditka in the top ten NFL coaches. In no particular order: Lombardi, Halas, Brown, Walsh, Shula, Landry, Noll, Belichick, Lambeau, Grant. Heck even guys like Schottenheimer, Stram, Holmgren, Levy, etc. are better coaches in my book.

NCAA Basketball: John Wooden NCAA Wrestling: Dan Gable

Not sure who they are? (Ok, you know who Wooden is), but look at those credentials and records and then you'll have a few more to add to the list.

Gable will always get my vote, not because I'm a wrestling writer, but Gable's records at Iowa will boggle the mind of any non-wrestling sports fan.

I thought people made a really big deal out of this when they shouldn't have. First off, they acted surprised; if any coach is going to hit one of his players, it's probably going to be Knight. Second, he didn't hit him hard; it got the kid's attention, but he's not really acting like it hurt. This is Knight's schtick, this is what he does. Unusual, yes, shocking, no.

My father General Armchair would grab my helmut, make me look at him straight in the eyes and ask "Son, did you try your best?", I would reply "Yes sir", his reply "Son, your best ain't good enough. I am embarrased to be your father!", or if I said "No sir" he responded "Didn't think so, have a nice walk home".

THERE IS NOT QUESTION WHO THE GREATEST COACH WAS OR IS THREE LITTLE WORDS: JOHN ROBERT WOODEN. And I don't even have to go any further or even mention the school which we all know is UCLA. Knight isn't even fit to hold his jock strap. Knight is and was a horse's behind now and forever. He has done things and said things that can't even be printed. Class, ability, knowledge, presence, god fearing, lives by what he believes. In all the years I have gotten to know Coach since 1947 he has never said anything that would put him or the school in bad lights. He will forever be mentioned with just only "Coach", His records speak for themselves as does his life. When knight wins 10 NCAA championships in 12 years maybe he will be considered in Wooden's class. All the respond that he had the talent is a load of you know what because he did it without Alcindor and Walton and with no player over 6'5" and didn't lose a game in his first championship year. You folks don't remember Knight throwing a chair on to the floor in the PanAm games, or his remarks and crap he pulled during the Olympics. He hit players, cursed at officials and fans, flipped off all kinds of individuals and his mouth in most of his TV interviews belonged in a bar on canal street. Class he doesn't have and even his coaching ability is questioned after all the incidents happened and he finally got fired from Indiana..He is one of the most winningest coaches in college but his attitude and demeanor are somewhat wanting.

Discipline doesn't mean kicking them in the head on national television or hitting them up the side of the head because they didn't do it the way you wanted it done. Knight either is going to have to change his style or leave the game. Today's player will not take all the crap that he puts out. His record speaks for itself but getting there isn't something he can be proud of.....His abilities as a coach are well documented but his style of coaching and behavior are so far out of the normal that it makes his statistics and awards almost without merit. Everyone knows he will not change so he will go down in basketball history as a loudmouthed, overly opinionated, ego centered individual with no understanding of others feelings.
