Grant Hill The Suns = Championship

by user Smittylite

In just one day, when Free Agency begins, Grant Hill will officially become a Phoenix Sun. Hill's agent has said that Hill has agreed in principal to a two-year contract offer from the Phoenix Suns, worth a total of just under $4 million. The beautiful thing is, $500,000 of that is paid by a league fund for veterans and will not count against the Salary Cap. While Grant was offered more money by other teams (supposedly), the Suns fit the wish list he was looking for, which consists of a) A Championship contender, b) A chance to start, c) A style that fits him, and d) Lighter practices, due to his injury concerns.

And therein lies the only possible drawback to this deal: Hill's injury-plagued past. After signing a 6-year, $93 Million deal with Orlando in 2000, Hill has spent much of his time on the IR, having appeared in more than 30 games in just two seasons. In fact, in six seasons, Hill played in only 200 of 492 regular season games for the Magic.

His best year, however, was last year, where Hill played in 58 games and averaged 14.4 points, while shooting better than 50%. While not a three-point shooter, Hill attempted just 12 all last year, Hill has other great attributes he will bring to the Suns. One of those attributes, which GM Steve Kerr and Head Coach Mike D'Antoni in particular triumph, is Hill's ability to be a playmaker and distributor while Steve Nash is not on the floor. D'Antoni also said he likes Hill's late career push for a Championship, providing some veteran leadership for the young team.

Hill is expected to challenge Boris Diaw for the last starting position, alongside Nash, Raja Bell, Shawn Marion, and Amare Stoudemire. Personally, i think they should hand him the starting job. I like Diaw coming off the bench better anyway, and Hill is a stud who will make the Suns go. Essentially he replaces Jr Jones, and while he doesn't have the 3 range Jones did, Hill rebounds well and can provide valuable leadership, as well as create his own shot when the Suns' offense goes through their lulls they are bound to have during games.

While Hill is no Kevin Garnett, he is still a great pick-up for the Suns. Every team needs that one veteran pushing everyone, and now the Suns have two with Nash and Hill. The time for the Suns is 2007-2008, and the run to the Championship begins in 4 months.

I think adding a guy like Grant Hill won't hurt the Suns. He has a lot of experience and can definitely help the Suns win ball games, but the question is will it be enough for the Suns to beat the Spurs/Mavs next year? Maybe. I think they definitely have what it takes. Barbosa, Nash, Hill, Amare, Bell, Marion... you got a lotta underrated players there. Then you got Horry, Duncan, Ginobili, Parker, Barry, etc. For the Mavs, you got Nowitzki leading the way. Those are the big 3. Let's see what it comes down to in June of next year..

Yeah, i can't wait for next year. I'm still less worried about the Mavs than I am the Spurs. I think we're in good shape though...

I believe I would like one of what you're drinking. The assumption that Grant Hill will even play a full season or be healthy to help the Suns in the playoffs is not a valid one based on past performance. Saying that he is the missing piece for the Suns before the rest of the off-season wheeling and dealing has taken place is so pie in the sky illogical that it boggles my mind.

If this was 1997, then yes, Hill to the Suns would likely mean a ring for the desert. This, however, is 2007. The Suns still don't play defense. Hill is in his 30's and very injury prone. I'm sorry, but I do not see any glory coming to the Suns by bringing in Hill.

Admittedly, it all depends on his health. But if he stays healthy, he's not going to hurt the Suns. He brings more to the table than the man he replaces (James Jones), to a team that was arguably the 2nd best team in the league last year. And he's got veteran leadership and maturity that benefits championship teams. Am i saying the Suns will win it all? No. But Hill makes one of the best two or three teams of the last two years even better. No-lose situation.

Well Look at at this way, every one knos Grant can't even play 10 minutes without takin a rest what about the 82 games? What the suns have to do is get rid of Mario so they can bring in a monster like "Garnett" Marions role has litterly been cut out of the suns. But the wolfs won't just take marion they'll be wantin more, so a few small role player will make the deal work. The line up will go smething like this

C- Amare Stademire PF- Kevin Garnett SF- Grant Hill/ 2008 !st round pick(Hawks) SG- Lenardo Barbosa PG- Steve Nash

Grant isn't the awnser for the Suns Kevin Garnett is, and why are the suns taking sooo long to accept the offer the wolfs are giving? The new offer is ( Garnett, Ricky Davis For Marion, Boris Diaw,& Marcus Banks) Plus with Altanta Hawks 1st round pick with no barriers the suns have their fingers crossed that the Hawks have an off season!!

There is no way the Suns get Garnett and keep the Atlanta pick. Marion will opt-out of his contract after next year anyway if he gets traded to Minnesota. In the deal that you are proposing the Timberwolves would essentially be giving us Garnett AND Ricky Davis for Diaw. Plus they would take Marcus Bank's contract off of our hands, and we wouldn't even have to give them the Atlanta pick. Nice pipe dream. Even Kevin McHale isn't that stupid, and if he was the commissioners office would never allow it to happen.

The sentiment that the suns don't play defense is a bit of a misnomer. The Suns ranked 7th in the NBA in Defensive Efficiency (as measured in points allowed per 100 possessions). They just play so fast that they give up a lot of possessions. They're certainly no defensive juggernaut but in the end it's gonna come down to Nash's back and Hills legs more than their defense. If they make shots when it counts they'll be right there with the best of them as long as they don't do something silly like trade for an aging Garnett who doesn't fit their system as well as Stoudemire and Marion to begin with.

Garnett is actually a better fit for the Suns offense than Stoudamire because he is a better passer. He is also a better on ball defender which is the main thing the Suns need. I love how everyone seems to think Garnett is old and washed up, but nobody seems to remember that Stoudamire had MICROFRACTURE SURGERY!!! If you don't think he is eventually going to have other knee problems then I got some property I would like to sell you. Not only that, but Garnett is the same age now that Steve Nash was when the Suns signed him three years ago. Of course everyone said he was old and washed up too.

the Suns need someone to contain Parker, Ginobili, and Duncan in a 7 game post-season series. I'm not sure the addition of Grant Hill solves that problem, regardless of if he's healthy or not. Adding another interior shot-blocking threat like Garnett or Jermaine ONeal without giving up Stoudamire would help. I think the Suns can beat the Mavs with their current roster because they are mentally tougher. The Spurs will be tough.
