Granny Hamner (Granville Wilbur Hamner) was born on April 26, 1927 in Richmond, Virginia. He made his Major League debut on September 14, 1944 for the Philadelphia Phillies. In 1948, his rookie year, he hit .260 with 3 home runs and 48 RBI. Hamner played for the Philadelphia Phillies, Cleveland Indians and Kansas City Athletics over the course of his 17 year career.

Most people believe that Granny Hamner's best season was 1953, when he slugged 21 home runs, hit for a .276 average and knocked in 92 runs.
