Graham's 2006 NFC North Preview

Well Omar's preview got me thinking so I guess I can't critique until I write my own.

1st Place- Chicago Bears

Let's start out with the best team in this division, the Bears. Although the bears usually have down years after winning the division, this year looks like an exception. It remains to be seen if Kyle Orton or Rex Grossman can really have a good season at quarterback. I am expecting Grossman to get the starting job and do a good job handing off the ball to Thomas Jones and Cedric Benson. Muhsin Muhammad can be a servicable reciever when called upon. I expect him to have another decent season next year. The defense will be spectacular as usual and will lead the NFL in total defense and other catagories. I expect them to be one of the better teams in the NFC considering that they have one of the easiest records. It is not going to be an easy task for the vikings to pry the NFC north crown from the Bears hands this upcoming season.

Predicted Record- 12-4 (NFC North Champions)

2nd Place- Minnesota Vikings

Yes, I get it, Brad Johnson is pretty old. I don't think the age of brad will keep the Vikings from being a fairly good team this upcoming season. Although Brad is old, he is still a servicable starter, and for the record, he is better than any other starting quarterback in the NFC North. He thrives in the West Coast offense and normally plays mistake-free football. If Brad happens to go down, Mike McMahon is a solid backup at best and knows the offense like the back of his hand. The additions of Chester Taylor, Steve Hutchinson, Artis Hicks, and Tony Richardson will play a huge role in the solidifying of the Vikings running game. Hutchinson is a perrenial pro-bowl guard and Artis Hicks is a solid starter. The additions of those two plus the return of Matt Birk make this re-tooled offensive line one of the better ones in the league. Tony Richardson will continue to be known as one of the greatest lead blockers in the game while Chester Taylor reaps the benefits of great pulling guards and lead blocking on his way to a 1000 yard season. Troy Williamson and Koren Robinson will be servicable in the West Coast offense with Travis Taylor getting some catches as well. Don't expect a 1000 yard season out of any of them but just enough to get the job done. Jermaine Wiggins and Jim Kleinsasser will both do well as tight ends throughout the season. Jermaine will continue to be one of the biggest sleepers at tight end in the league. Unlike in the past, the problem with the Vikings no longer lies in their defense. The biggest problem with their defense last year was the fact that Ted Cotrell couldn't coach himself out of a paper bag and that he wasn't helping any of the players progress. Their linebackers were fairly better last year but didn't fit the new scheme that Mike Tomlin was bringing in. The vikings defense is now built around the cover 2 with the additions of Tank Williams, Ben Leber, and arguably the best linebacker in the draft, Chad Greenway. The Defensive like will only get better as Erasmus James and Kenechi Udeze continue to grow and Kevin and Pat Williams continue to be the two best defensive tackles in the league. Darren Sharper will be in the pro-bowl and Antoine Winfield will likely be snubbed again. And what is this I hear about Fred Smoot with a work ethic? Looks like the secondary got better too.

Predicted Record- 10-6 (Wild Card Berth)

Tie 3rd Place(no particular order) - Detroit Lions

Many people aren't believing that the addition of Jon Kitna was all that great but I am a believer. I have always thought that Kitna was one of the most underrated quarterbacks in the NFL. He is on the downside of his career but he is good enough to keep the lions from getting worse than they were last year. He should mentor Josh McCown for the future.

The Lions still have a great recieving corps. and the finally have a good Quarterback to work with. Kevin Jones is servicable at Running back but the question is whether their offensive line can hold up this coming year. the addition of Mike Martz at offensive coordinator will help at least a little bit. If they fired Matt Millen they would be in decent shape.

The Lions defense is still below average for the upcoming season. I once saw a rising star in Terrence Holt but the same cant be said any more now that he has departed. It is now unclear who will start at either safety position. Dre' Bly showed that he is not the great Cornerback we all thought he was last year. The Defensive line is still well anchored by Big Dan Wilkinson and Shaun Rogers but the linebackers are still poor even with the acquisition of Ernie Sims, the speedy standout from Florida State. I expect the lions to leave us all wondering why we still think this team can take the next step despite the fact that they have an upgraded offense.

Predicted Record- 6-10

Tie 3rd Place- Green Bay Packers

This offseason the Packers fired Mike Sherman and went with the surprise hire of Head coach Mike McCarthy. Now, I have no idea why a team would hire a coach that didn't even have success at their respective coordinator positions. They may have rushed into a hire but that remains to be seen.

As usual during the offseason, Packers quarterback Brett Favre held the team hostage by not declaring whether he would return to the team for 'one last season' or not. In the end (as if it wasn't predictable) Favre decided to return for 'one last season' despite throwing an abismal 29 interceptions. According to most sports analysts, those interceptions were not all his fault.

The loss of Javon Walker for the season last year did not help Favre at all however, Walker will not be back again this season due to the fact that he was traded to the Denver Broncos to make more money. Ahman Green will likely play a three headed monster role at running back with Samkon Gado and Najeh Davenport. As most teams learned in the past, this actually doesn't work well. The worst part of the Packers offense is their offensive line. Nothing on that line stands out to me as spectacular, or for that matter, very good. I mean, come on, William Henderson can't do ALL the blocking. I expect Favre to be just as bad as last season considering that his only real target is Donald Driver.

The packers defense is getting Gradually better but is still not something you would rave about. Nick Barnett, AJ Hawk, and Abdul Hodge look to be one year away from being that scary linebacking corps. Nick Collins and Mark Roman are so-so at best as Safeties. Al Harris is a solid cornerback but Charles Woodson is overrated and (as usual) overpayed. His absense from training camp shows me how much he doesnt care. The team doesn't look to be going in the wrong direction but they are still at the least one year away.

Hey packers GM. Step one to success- get over Brett Favre and let the kid start. It won't be the end of the world in Green Bay if the team starts winning again.

Predicted Record- 6-10

Tell me what you think everyone. This is my first entry so I hope i didn't screw anything up.

Something that was lost in all the Packers' losses last year was that they ranked in the top half of the league defensively. About five of their losses came by about a touchdown or less, which means the team was an additional touchdown per game away from being 8-8, or as some of us Wisconsinites have come to refer to it as the Mike Sherman Factor. The Mike Sherman Factor, simply put, is the difference of a win and loss due to some overly shoddy and conservation coaching moves. Mike Holmgren was known for being a conservative coach, but Sherman was worse. And now we have a third Mike stolen from the West Coast offense days, so I'm thinking the torch has just been passed for the Mike McCarthy Factor. As for Brett Favre, the team was decimated with injuries. He had to work with third stringers for skill players and second string linemen, who happen to have thrust into the starting jobs for 2006 so you're dead on with that tidbit. I think it's less of Favre being bad, I think he's just getting accustomed to being old and not being able to do the things he used to. He used to be able to turn a Robert Ferguson into a great receiver, but not anymore. Good article, though. There's not much I don't agree with. It's awfully tough to predict this division though.

Good article. One point, if Detroit and Green Bay are going to tie, they ought to have the same record. I still think Green Bay may surprise one or two people. The ease of the schedule helps. We have the advantage of playing two games against worst opponents than Chicago, which might help us out somewhat.

didn't catch that. I could see Green bay suprising some this year with their defense and having a record between 7-9 and 9-7 I just still think they are one or two years awesy from having that stellar season where they show the rest of the NFL that they're back. At this point it's their offense holding them back and the fact that Brett Favre holds the team hostage every offseason.

I agree Brett is reckless, but the Packers still have talent, also we a lot of good tight ends to go along with donald driver; also for the Vikes, Chester Taylor appears to be having discipline issues already according to truth and rumours by SI, I guess running backs will always be up to bad stuff in Minnesota

dammit that was my comment, but I'll add, I really don't believe Brad Johnson is the best qb in the division, he may be the most careful, but I think Rex Grossman will be the best if Favre struggles again, also you didn't mention the wideouts, sure Wiggins is good, but where is that number one wideout, the Packers have a consisten 1000+ yard target in Donald Driver

On a consistent basis, in my opinion Brad is the best quarterback with Grossman coming in a close second. Grossman however has not proven he can even be a number one guy we just asssume that because he showed flashes of greatness in past years.

I think the wideouts on the Vikings are fine at this point. Chester Taylor should be a solid recieving threat coming out of the backfield in a west coast style system. Wiggins will continue to produce at tight end (whether he can block well or not remains to be seen) but Koren Robinson stepped it up as a #1 reciever at the end of last year and Troy Williamson was only a rookie last year. Troy put up similiar numbers to Braylon Edwards last year despite being in Tice's doghouse. Travis Taylor was around the 600 yard mark last year and Marcus Robinson will continue to be a huge red zone depth. The Vikings may not have that consistent 1000 yarder (yet) but they have 4 solid players that could emerge.

The Packers are the complete opposite. They have that 1000 yard target but if you stick double coverage from the safety overtop on him all game, who are the packers going to throw to? Once that's covered, teams can stack 7 in the box and rush the crap out of favre until he throws a pick.

Anonymous: The packers have talent, yes. That's why I mentioned that they are at least 1 year away from living up to their potential. I don't think that Bubba Franks is all that great of a tight end other than red zone situations. I don't really read into any of that truth and rumor stuff regarding work ethic etc. Most of the time it's bunk and just journalists taking coaches words and twisting them so that they have a story. It's usually false regardless of the team.

Here is a shocker - I see the NFC North being won with a team with only 9 wins. Here is shocker 2 - this team will be the Lions. The Packers are just a bad team which will hit rock bottom at some point this season. The Vikings have a new head coach but a gizzard at QB. Mike McMahon a solid backup? yeah, solid as long as he doesn't set forth on the field. Forget the Vikings to even break .500. The Bears are going to have serious chemistry issues on the offensive side of the ball. Who is the starting QB? Who is the starting RB? This is not going to end well. Hence, in a shocker, the Detroit Lions will win the NFC North with a record of 9-7.

Not when the rest of the NFC north eats up their secondary again. When writing this article, I was unable to find a solid safety on their entire roster. Dre' Bly is their only cornerback worth anything and he can't cover the whole field. They may be able to get pressure up front, but when all your linebackers are trying to make up for the DB's mistakes good things can't happen. Also expect a lot of missed tackles from Ernie Sims if his same mistakes transfer over from the college level.

Year after year we hear this same argument- the lions will win the North and will finally be that force to be reckoned with in the NFC and year after year the same thing happens- they have a losing season and end up with a top 15 pick in the draft. What makes you think this year is any different? I see the only bright spot on offense as kitna. Mike Williams is probably better suited as a tight end, and Charles Rogers hasn't proven that he can go a season without having major surgery. Roy Williams had a solid rookie season but hasn't shown anything since his rookie season. Kevin Jones would be lucky to produce again behind his abysmal line and Pollard can't get all the catches.

Plus, Matt Millen is still there. That should factor in as a few losses by itself.

The Bears will not go below 8-8 and neither will the Vikings. It remains to be seen if the Packers could go .500 but I could see it happening. Still a little doubtful in my mind. The Lions will not go above .500 next season.

Matt Milen is the GM, not the head coach. He does not do the X and O's for each game. I don't know if you hate the Lions or are just a bitter fan of the club, but you are much too negative on them. On the other hand, you are much too high on both the Vikings and Bears.

I realize he is the GM. He is probably the worst GM in football. If you don't remember, Lions fans were covering their heads with paper bags due to his terrible decisions made last year. You know you are bad when your own fans are rioting in the streets to have you fired. He tried to save his own ass by signing Kitna. We'll see how it goes this coming season.

I don't hate the Lions, I'm not being a bitter fan, I am being realistic. The Lions simply haven't shown that they can have that stellar season. Year after year we have this same argument and we continue to watch the Lions have losing seasons. Almost all other fans in the NFL will agree with me. I am high on the Vikings and Bears because I think they will win the division. It's as simple as that. Just because I didn't hype up your favorite team doesn't mean that I'm a 'bitter fan' or 'hate the Lions'.

For the record, I am a Vikings fan. If I was biased, I would have had the Vikings winning the division with a 16-0 record while every other team goes 5-11 and 3-13. This is called being realistic.

Hey man... don't categorize ALL of the people on fox as fucktards. Fox TELEVISION is full of all the fucktards however Fox sports radio is awesome. But yeah. What you say is true. I'm kind of tired of it. They are not the rams of '99. Kevin Jones is not Marshall Faulk. Jon Kitna is not Kurt Warner. Charles Rogers and Roy Williams are not Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce. Enough said.

Hey, I was going to do an NFC North preview! Oh well, at least this will be the last time a Viking beats a Packer this year. 8-) Here's how I'm calling it: 1) CHICAGO... Bear-ly. They need better offensive playmakers and to avoid a QB controversy between Orton and Grossman, otherwise even their defense may not be enough to get them back to the postseason, and forget the Super Bowl. 2) DETROIT: The anti-Bears. Loads of young offensive talent and an offensive coordinator who knows a thing or two about building high-powered offenses. Now all they need is a defense that can hold up their end of the bargain. 3) GREEN BAY: Last season may have been an aberration, but even if the Pack can avoid the injury bug they don't have the weapons they need to make one last Super Bowl run with Brett Favre (especially with Javon Walker now in Denver). More likely they'll simply be playing for their jobs, because once Favre finally leaves for good, a major house-cleaning at 1265 Lombardi is a foregone conclusion. 4) MINNESOTA: The Vikings are in pretty much the same boat as the Packers. (Hopefully they'll behave themselves on the boat this time.) New head coach, ancient but still dangerous QB but an otherwise so-so offense, and a defense that gets the job done but isn't yet the dominant kind that wins titles. They do have one thing the Packers don't, though: Cheesy new uniforms! The Queens could also be in for some serious housecleaning if they don't improve in 2006.

The difference between the packers and vikings is that the vikings have an extremely good offensive line. It all starts in the trenches. The Packers happen to have one of the worst in the NFL. You saw what happened to a solid Texans team last year. That's the difference between 4th and 2nd place.

Also you have to see that the vikings have better talent on both sides of the ball. Ahman Green is quickly becoming the oldest player in his 20's if you get what I mean. One target at WR can ruin a team's chances as we've seen with steve smith in the playoffs last year.. and still... Driver is no steve smith.

The Vikings aren't in the same boat as the packers at all. We have a WAY better o-line, A better fullback (arguably), 2 Better tight ends, a better recieving corps. a better quarterback (no matter what all the favre loving cheeseheads say 29 interceptions flat out sucks) a better defensive line by far, an equal linebacking corps, and a better secondary by far.

To make my lions point... Chris Harry, of the Orlando Sentinel, reports Detroit Lions general manager Matt Millen could be on the hot seat this upcoming season. Since he has taken over, the Lions have a record of 21-59, a .263 winning percentage. The team also has five consecutive seasons with double-digit losses, the longest such streak in the NFL.
