Goodbye, Torii

by False Prophet

It's official.

Torii Hunter has signed a 5 year deal worth upwards of 70 million dollar with the Los Angeles Angels. I can't say I'm shocked. This has been expected for a long time. I knew that when the Twins offered a three year deal in the middle of the season to him, that it was a take it or leave it situation. The Twins have a long history of not being willing to put up the big money to make a deal when they have to.

I can't blame Hunter for this as well. He went to a superior team for a longer contract and a larger salary. It'd be stupid of him not to go to LA. He'll enjoy a winning atmosphere, while playing on an outdoor grass field.

It hurts though, a lot. Hunter has been the organization's face for over a decade. He's been the one guy that you knew would be out on the field every night, and would try and give the team a chance to win. It won't feel right to watch him play for someone else.  It'd be like watching Favre take snaps under center for the Bears. There's just no way that it can ever seem right.

I'll miss you Hunter. You've meant a lot to Minnesota, and a lot to Twins fans.

But this shows a different side of the story. The Pohlad Family needs to stop misleading Twins fans. We agreed to pay for a brand new stadium that would help make our team more competitive. What do they do the following year?  They let Hunter walk. And on top of that, they're expected to trade Santana before Spring Training. HOW THE HECK IS THIS MAKING A TEAM MORE COMPETITIVE? We let our top outfielder walk, and we're going to trade our biggest star. It makes no sense.

I've trusted the Pohlad family and the Twins organization to do what's right for too long to let this slide by. They've got to step up and spend more money so the team can be competitive.  They cannot, however, trade Santana for Pitching prospects. EARTH TO KARL POHLAD: YOU CAN'T WIN A WORLD SERIES SOLELY ON PITCHING. YOU ACTUALLY HAVE TO SCORE TO WIN.

I think I'm just going to cry. This hurts way to much for it to be ignored.  Instead of strengthening our team, we're weakening it. We now have a need for help at third base, and every outfield position. If they want people to buy tickets to Twins games, they have to field a team that will go somewhere.  Being stuck in neutral when the team cannot get into the playoffs is not a smart strategy.

It IS really hard to see one of your favorite players on your favorite team to leave. It reminds me of the time when Orlando Cabrera left, and he was just on the Red Sox for one year. I have no idea what it's like to have someone who gives his team a positive attitude, with the best defense as a center fielder, and a good bat and decent speed to leave my favorite team. I feel for the Twins and their fans. And BTW,

and to the angels, who ended what could have been a story book season in 2002 after being threatened with Contraction

I heard 80 mil or more. Holy moly. Hunter's a nice player, but the Angels are gonna be overpaying for him.

Another good point. Sadly, who will be in centerfield ought to be a no-brainer. Gary Matthews has a pretty good bat and he makes some phenomenal plays, but he's nowhere near the centerfielder Hunter is.

From an Angels point of view at least they are trying to help Vlad carry the Angels to the series next year.

The Pohlads are baseballs version of the Bidwells. Except the Pohlads are rich and cheap, not cheap and cheap.

Are you actually criticizing him for not giving a 32-year-old outfielder with a career .324 OBP five years at $16-17 per?

watch Karl Pohlad trade Santana to a team for like 5 pitching prospects. I think I might disown the twins if that happens.

I'm mad bc all Hunter cared about was the length They could have gotten him for 12 mil/year for 5 years. Now we have no outfield, potentially no pitching ace, no third baseman, and our No. 1 pitcher hasn't thrown in a game since 2006.

Trading Santana makes sense if they can get some very good position players back because they have six starters and not much hitting depth (though they've still got Mauer, Morneau, and Cuddyer). Resigning an overpaid Hunter with money that could be used to extend Santana, Morneau, or even Nathan would not be making the team better at all.

Nathan should be traded at the deadline if they aren't competititive. Pat Neshek can be a closer. But now they've mad no signings and have 3 starters needed.

If they trade Santana, here's the rotation:

  1. Liriano - If he's ok, this is probably an upgrade. IF he's not, we'll end up like the Cubs with 2 once young phenoms that can't pitch any more.
  1. Bonser - I don't know what to think about him. He can be good, but he's really not a good no 2 option, or even a good 3 option.
  1. Garza - I mean he's still extremely young, but I don't feel safe knowing that my 1-3 could all collapse.
  1. Baker - Eh. I guess as a 4 he's good.
  1. Slowey/Perkins/? - Both of the young guys have talent, I just don't know if their major league starter ready

so out of 5 starters, we have one that's good at his slot, 1 that you could flip a coin with to start the season, and if you lose we're screwed; 2 that are talented, but on a team that expects to compete for the division title, are not MLB-ready

Yes, Liriano is somewhat of a question mark, but between him, Bonser, Garza, Baker, Slowey, Perkins, the other guys in their system who are almost ready, and anybody else they might get in a trade, they'll be able to put together a servicable rotation. They've got one of the best pens in the league, and the whole point of a Santana trade would be to improve their offense enough that their rotation doesn't have to be outstanding.

Saw a photo of Nathan working out here in Knoxville in newspaper. Like False Prophet wrote it is stupid of Pohlad to let two of their best players leave the team. And you can't even count on Morneau after his disaster of a second half when he had 7 seven home runs and 37 RBI's while slugging .384 after the All Star game. They only had three players with more than 13 home runs and one of them (Hunter) is gone.Only three players had more than 65 RBI's and now it down to 2 with the loss of Hunter. Joe Mauer only played in 109 games and his batting average dipped 54 points from 2006 season. Johan Santana and Carlos Silva led the team in wins with 15 and 13 respectively. If they lose Silva to free agency and Santana is traded the next best pitcher returning would be Scott Baker with 9 wins last season. Who is going to want to go to see a team in a new stadium that will probably lose 85 or more games a season?

Too many teams these days are more worried about saving money than winning games. Atlanta has been doing the same thing for years. Except for John Smoltz and Chipper Jones they let players go when they become free agents. Texeira will be the next to go unless they decide to pay the big money and keep him.
