Good homestand Equal playoffs?

Okay, the Philadelphia Phillies enter yesterday one game back of the San Diego Padres for the wild card and 5 games back of the New York Mets for the division. The Phillies play the Los Angeles Dodgers for 3 games, Padres for 3 games and the Mets for 4 games. Say the Phillies have a great weekend going 8-2 or 9-1. even 7-3.

The Phillies have now tied for the Wild Card lead with the Padres and can very well pull away in that the club plays the Padres this week for three at CBP and possibly the division depending on how they play against the division. Then the Phils play the Florida Marlins 6 times, the Atlanta Braves 6 times, the Washington Nationals 6 times, 3 game set with the St. Louis Cardinals and 4 games with the Colorado Rockies and they have a series with the Mets. If they have the September they had last year and Chase Utley is coming back for Monday does anyone else think they have a huge shot?

I think its going to be an amazing race for that NL East and NL Wildcard race. For the same reasons you are pushing for the Phillies to have a few good home stands and get it, I think the Braves can do the same thing.

"If they have the September they had last year "...until that last week where they went 4-4...against the Marlins and Nats...

As i've said before...the pitching staff right now is: Moyer, Kendrick, Lohse, Durbin and...uhh...Fabio Castro I believe is gonna get the start...

That staff is pretty far from the Hamels, Moyer, Eaton, Garcia, Lieber staff that was expected in mid-may...(myers moved to the pen after 3 starts...lets pretend he was always a reliever for the sake of argument)

Utley returning to the lineup will (hopefully) bust howard out of his mini-slump...

If anything the Phils truly have been kept afloat by good and timely hitting and 2 big surprises:

1) Pat Burrell (I'm eating crow...tastes fine, thanks)

2) A passable bullpen (Which besides the Pittsburgh series, has been respectable since Mid-July)

The only thing the Phils can do is hope that Chase Utley can help the Phils win some games all by himself. The pitching/injuries of the pitchers they have are not helping at all, which is why I think they'll miss the playoffs by a game or 2.

I wrote something about the NL Wild Card in Niteowl's baseball Notebook yesterday. I said that there's no doubt that the Braves will make it. They have been struggling, but check this out:

San Diego Padres have the WC lead, and the Braves are 2 1/2 back, right? I think their offense is what's going to put them in the lead sooner or later. Let's look at all of the NL teams right now:

Mets: Many people say they're a shoe in for the playoffs, and I agree.

Braves: Got just about everything, except for the consistent starting pitching, and I think they might need a better bullpen. After Smoltz and Hudson, their SPs suck.

Phils: Lack of pitching will be the factor of why they won't make the playoffs

Cubs: IMO, they'll make the playoffs. They've got Alfy Soriano coming back, and one of the strongest starting rotations in the league.

Brewers: They'll miss the playoffs by a game or 2. Sheets isn't healthy, Capuano isn't the guy he was in April/May, and who do they have besides Fielder and Braun? Hardy? Ehh.. he's on and off.

Cards: Chris Carpenter isn't helping them. If he was, I would probably have second thoughts. The improvement of their starters helped them get as far as they did, but I think they're gonna back right back down sooner or later.

Padres: They have no offense besides Adrian Gonzalez. Mike Cameron isn't doing too well and neither is Brian Giles. Khalil Greene and Kouzmanoff are "ehh". Morgan Ensberg was a boost for their lineup at first, but he's not going to change the lineup. After Peavy and Young, their SPs aren't great either. They're only shot is against the "lucky/surpising" Diamondbacks; Webb has gotta cool down sometime.

DBAX: It's a battle between them and the Pads. Whoever loses misses the playoffs.

Dodgers: Aren't themselves, and they have problems on offence.

Rockies: They have all the hitting they need, but NO PITCHING at all.

So who do you have in the WC? Rockies actually have decent pitching, you just haven't noticed ; - )
