Good Choice From A-Rod: Why Stay Where You're Not Wanted?

19
Vote

by Kenrick Thomas

After three seasons with the New York Yankees, Alex Rodriguez decided to opt out his contract.
Brian Cashman received a text message from Scott Boras that Rodriguez was opting out.

"At 9:32 there was a voice mail from Scott Boras to call him. He wanted to give me a heads up on something, was the message," Cashman said. "And then at 9:42 was a text message saying he was opting out."

It wasn't professional, but Rodriguez did what's best. Cashman wanted to speak with Rodriguez before his decision, but didn't get the chance.

"If there was no public announcement from Scott Boras on that, you could still always unring the bell because from the public standpoint, the bell was never rung." Cashman said. "I could have said, `Hey, listen, you sure you want to do this? Let's talk, you know, you take another crack at an opportunity -- can you please, you know, give us an opportunity to sit down and have the dialogue?"'

It wouldn't work, Rodriguez made his final decision. Playing for the Yankees wouldn't work, because he was treated wrong. Fans disliked him, and his teammates aren't fair towards him. Money wouldn't change Rodriguez mind, it's his comfort.

A conversation should have happened, because it's professional. Cashman helped him, and got Rodriguez away from the Texas Rangers. Rodriguez should have meet with Cashman before his departure.

"Obviously the message was sent, and it was sent loud and clear, you know, through Scott Boras when he announced it the way he did, that the bell couldn't be unrung after that," Cashman said.

"We instructed the Yankees that we would be more than happy to meet with them once we knew more information about the ownership's decision about the composition of the team and that it was not possible to make any decision within a 10-day period," Boras said.

It doesn't matter now, because Rodriguez isn't a Yankee. Meeting with Cashman wouldn't make sense, because its too late.

Finding another team isn't hard, because Rodriguez has the talent. "I would say A-Rod's my favorite to watch," Brooks Robinson said. "I enjoy watching him, just the way he plays the game."

The announcement wasn't an issue, because the World Series wasn't entertaining. The Boston Red Sox had the advantage, and were taking control. The World Series needed a surprise, and Rodriguez give it.

"I've met with A-Rod a few times and I really like the guy. To me he's a class act. I'm sure he didn't go around saying, 'Hey, I'm going to opt out,"' Robinson said. "Somehow it got out and whether it was supposed to or not that's just the way it is. But his career won't be complete until he gets in a World Series. I mean a World Series is so important. As a kid, at least me, that's all I ever dreamed about."

Rodriguez needs a championship, because the Yankees couldn't provide that.

Many teams are interested in Rodriguez, and he'll have many to choose from.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have showed interest, but Rodriguez and Boras haven't made any decision. The Dodgers need help, because they broke down this season. Hiring Torre is the goal, but it won't change anything if the players remain. Changes and improvement need to happen.

The New York Mets are interested as well, but I doubt it'll happen. The Mets have David Wright and Jose Reyes, their line-up doesn't need improvement. Pitching should be the goal, because that caused their failure.

Playing in the National League will be easy for Rodriguez, and he'll succeed every season. Mostly N.L. teams have been showing interest, and its likely he'll play there.

The Los Angeles Angels are the only American League team that's showing interest.

The Boston Red Sox are the best for Rodriguez, because he'll have the chance to win a championship. He'll be threated good by the fans, and the teammates will show respect. The pressure isn't as hard in Boston, and comfort wouldn't be an issue.

First of all fans have treated him just fine in the 4 years that he was with the team. In New York we boo players that don't come through in the clutch. Heck, a few years ago when Derek Jeter was hitting below .200 a month and a half into the season, Yankees fan were boing DJ.

When you're making $250,000,000 and a fan spends their hard money by buying a ticket, spending $8 for a beer and $6 for a hot dog you should be able to boo if the highest paid player in baseball doesn't come through.

A-Rod didn't hear the boo birds in the Bronx this yera because he cam through in the clutch more often than not. He also hit 52 homers and drove in over 150. Pretty much what would be expected from a guy who makes that sort of money.

A-Rod is a big part of why the Yankees have not won the W.S. since his arrival. Hard to win games when your supposed best player hit .133 and .076 in key situations. He talked about how important it was to be a Yankee and how much he loved New York. Apparently what he loves is $$$$ and having Boras lead him around by his balls.

Not even providing the Yanks with a chance to talk to him shows how much he wanted out of NY. He walsk away from $72 Million left on his deal and another $150 Million over 5 years because he doesn't know what a 37 year old pitcher, a 36 year old catcher and a 35 year old starter haven't resigned? Like Andy, Jorge and Mo will be playing into their mid 40's?!!!!

Screw A-Rod! The Yankees managed to go to 6 world series in 8 years without him! Haven't won with him but they can win without him. As long as a team has pitching they will win. The Yankees have young arms galore. I can't wait to see the parade down the Canyon of Heroes while A-Rod watches from his living room.

The Yankees are the only team that can pay the type of money they were offering and still be competive. Pay-Rod will find out soon enough.

Will Boras talk A-Rod into signing with the highest bidder or the highest bidder with a chance to contend in 2008? It would be pure greed if he signs with Rays or Pirates although Manny's Rays may surprise us all in 2008.

A-Rod was treated like crap here in New York and it was damn near sickening. 2 MVPS as a Yankee and you would think he was Judas. And I'm saying this as a Yankee fan. Even during the moment when everybody called up WFAN and sung his praises, I knew good and well these same folks would be booing A-Rod later. How many hats can a person wear?

Boston: Baseball

Philly: Football

Chicago: Tie (baseball, cubs and football, bears)...

anyways, the point is...he'll get as much crap in NY as boston based on performance...listening to Dennis and Callahan this morning, they noted that this boston is the worst fit...not only is he a former yankee....but he's expected to fail and they won't stand for that...

Rodriguez needs a championship, because the Yankees couldn't provide that

There are some comments which go totally over my head, Tyrone. I wasn't aware the Yankees were supposed to provide ARod a championship, all this time I thought it was the other way around. (Slaps self in head in bewilderment).

In February, 2004, the Yankees were beginning their defense of their 2003 AL title, and figured obtaining a player of Rodriguez' stature would contribute to their efforts. Essentially stealing ARod from Texas for an offense minded and defensive liability in Alfonso Soriano and a minor league player who has played a grand total of six major league games was a risk any team would have taken.

So what happened since? In 2004, the Yankees became the only professional sports team to lose a 3-0 lead in a seven game series. ARod hit .258 for the series with 2 homers and five RBI, in the four consecutive losses was 2-17 with one HR and two RBI, a two run homer in the third inning of game four which gave the Yanks a 2-0 lead. Since that AB, he was 1-15 with no RBI.

In 2005, the Yankees lost three games to two in the Divison Series to the Angels. ARod was 2-15 in the series with no RBI and a team leading five strikeouts.

In 2006, the Yankees again lost the Division Series, this time 3 games to one to Detroit. ARod was even worse, going 1-14 with no runs scored or RBI.

ARod's performance in the 2007 ALDS vs Cleveland was a bit better, slightly, going 4-15 with one homer and one RBI and leading the team in K's once again.

So in the four elimination series ARod has partaken in as a member of the Yankees, the Yanks are 0-4, with ARod a combined 9-61 (.148 BA) with two homers and three RBI, all his RBI being a result of the two homers. Subtract them from his totals, he is 7-59 (.119) with no RBI. A player of his caliber going 59 atbats without an RBI? Inexcusable. And for this the Yankees paid him over 50 million dollars?

And he's upset by the booing? And he's upset by how he's perceived by the fans, and more importantly, his teammates?

And to then hear and read comments like this one, where the Yankees are blamed for not winning? This guy's got to be a Met's fan. Or an alien. (Aren't they the same).

Anyway, ARod needed to leave, for the sake of the franchise and for the sake of his own personal reputation. If he lands in Chicago or LA or Atlanta and ends up with a ring or two, then good for him. He'll land in Cooperstown without a ring so what matters? As far as the Yankees go, this move can only improve the team, there may be a lack of production on the field next year but the clubhouse will be a much better place, and ask anyone who has ever been in one, that's way, way, more important than most people realize.

How's that, Tyrone. Meet your expectations?

I really don't believe chicago (cubs) are the place either...the light is certainly no less dimmer than in boston or NY...the only difference is, the cubs still have a "curse" going...but they're just as passionate and will rip him for poor performance just as much...

People ask me why I wouldn't want A-Rod in Philly...and its 2-fold:

1) We need pitching...duh

2) While we may have the greatest hitting infield of all time (Jimmy Rollins would be the weak link...Jimmy effin' Rollins!), we already have a great hitting team...and while 3b kinda sucks, its still made up for by 2nd and short...

Honestly, for a team that is driven partially by payroll, A-Rod is a poor fit...you can probably get just as much production for a 3rd + SS (or any 2 position combo) for perhaps 20 mil, than you could for A-Rod plus another player at 40-50 mil...think about that...

Who's better...A-Rod & Abreu at 45 mil or Howard and Utley at 4.5 mil? (and even when Howard gets a payday...15 mil)

Well...that's not true. He didn't go 59 at-bats without an RBI, he had three RBI, which you just removed. Babe Ruth went 100-something at-bats without an RBI in the postseason if you take away the at-bats in which he did get an RBI...

I am a die-hard Red Sox fan and I don't want ARod. No doubt he is one of the best players in the game, but I think he's greedy and I don't believe his personality will mesh well with our team. He got in a fight with our catcher, he lady-slapped a ball out of our former pitchers hand - he's not liked here. He should go to a National League team so we don't have to hear about his antics anymore. Just my opinion.

Right, he is totally crazy for taking an extra $5 millionish a year. I'm sure if someone offered you $5 million more onto your salary to play in a city where there is a chance they will respect you more, you wouldn't take it. Baseball is a business. Baseball is the players' JOB! Of course they are in it for the money, but that doesn't mean they don't love it or give it their best efforts.
