Goal of the Week 13 August 2007

There were some spectacular goals this week, as well as some less than spectacular keeping. But in terms of importance and pure class, the goal of the week was most certainly Steven Gerrard’s free kick against Aston Villa. This spectacular shot put Liverpool back on top 2-1, and earned them the three points. Contrary to last season, Liverpool displayed signs of life away from home and at the beginning of the season. The win kept them on pace with Chelsea and Arsenal, while defending champion Manchester United dropped 2 points behind the pace with their draw at Reading.

Yeah Gerrard did have a stunner of a free kick no doubt. But for me the Obafemi Martins bicycle kick for Newcastle against Bolton was goal of the week.

I thought it was more flashy, but I felt the importance and degree of difficulty was higher for Gerrard's goal. Few could have scored that Gerrard goal, but there are many players who could execute a bicycle kick.

Fair comment, Gerrard's free kick did have the higher degree of difficulty.
