Girardi declines O's offer...

16

by user Baltimoresports247

Former Marlins manager and NL Manager of the Year, Joe Girardi, has declined the O's offer to become the new manager of a struggling team. "It was just not the right time," said Girardi. Who can blame him? This team is the laughing stock of the MLB...

Regardless, Baltimore Orioles fans wanted Girardi...if he was to come to town, that meant that the O's were going to clean house (finally), trade the cancer that is Miguel Tejada, among other problem players like Erik Bedard, and bring in new, fresh, young talent, which this team is in DESPERATE need of. Maybe they will still do that, but who is next in line to manage the Orioles? And will the fans be excited for or support the new manager?

Reports are circulating through the local Baltimore sports media, from sources such as 1570 WNST  and The Baltimore Sun, that former O's manager Davey Johonson, as well as Dusty Baker, are in the mix for the heir-apparent to Sam Perlozzo, who shouldn't have been fired in the first place...but that's beside the point. We STILL have 3 GMs (MacPhail, Flanagan, and Duquette). I don't care...from the bat boy to the manager, it's time to clean house next season.

But, with this breaking news, Dave Trembley will probably remain manager for the rest of the season. Which I'm OK with...if Girardi wouldn't take this job, let's give Trembley a chance. He's a guy who has managed a ton of minor league games, and was recently described by several baseball people as one of the top five available managers to take over one of the MANY vacant managing positions that will become available either after the All-Star break or certainly before next season...let's see what he's made of.

Anyway, you heard it here first...stay tuned for more Baltimore sports news...

I could be wrong, but doesn't MLB have a rule about hiring managers mid season. Correct me, but can't you only promote in-house during the season...was the plan to hire for next season?

Secondly, Bedard is still pitching well (leading the league in Ks) adn I don't think he's that old...and Miggy Tejada is a cancer so much as Angelos is...he's just pissed that Angelos's "Commitment to Winning" is basically non-existent...he's the joke...

But yeah, they should trade tejada...he will have no value to them when they finally rebuild...

Bedard is a jerk...he scatters like a roach when the lights turn on every time the media is allowed in the locker room, and when they do catch him for an interview, he gives them one or two word crappy answers...I'd like to see them get rid of him too, especially if he doesn't want to be here

how can u have a "budding career" after just one season? Don't get me wrong, I wanted him too, but he's only got one year under his belt...it was a great year with a young team, which the Yankees won't have next season. Don Mattingly will be managing the Yanks.

From a season ticket holder, who works for 1570 AM WNST in Baltimore and who's father works for the Baltimore Sun, beers are $6.00 in your seats for 16 oz. bottles, $5.00 14 oz. drafts in the concession area...imports are $6.00 for 12 oz. bottles...all in all, not bad, especially considering the inner harbor, hooters, pickles pub, etc.

Wow, that's a lot of anger there. I'm a big O's fan, but they painted themselves into a corner with this whole Girardi thing, and I never thought he'd want to coach the O's anyway. But they don't need him, and Trembley can coach the team for the rest of the season so they can look for a better coach to fit the team. I agree with trading Tejada while they still can. He's lost a lot of power, and they could trade him for some younger talent. But what's with the hatred for Erik Bedard? He leads the league in Ks and has been great for this team. I don't care how great an interview Bedard is as long as he continues to pitch like an ace. Don't be mad at the starters; be mad at the bullpen.

No one is perfect, and when you look at the Orioles' starting pitching over the last several years, it's been terrible. You can go around the league and nit-pick with every single thing that's wrong with a player's attitude or how he treats the media. As long as he's pitching well then whatever.

He, simply put, pwned the orioles. Even if the former manager of the year DID take the Marlins a long way last year, the O's are probably not going to go anywhere this season. I think he should join a team where the manager is a main reason why the club is losing so many games (in other words, put Girardi in a team that helps a team win ballgames since he makes good decisions usually).

Its ashame but with the curret money situation the Orioles have no chance. They are broke as compared to teams like the Yankees and the Red Sox. Until baseball gets a cap (unlikely) or the Orioles start really spending money they will never be a serious contender

LOL. Give me a break. Girardi is not exactly the second coming of the Alex Rodriguez contract sweepstakes. This is a mangerial job we are talking about. And a salary cap has NOTHING to do with hiring baseball managers. The Orioles are rotten to the core and there was no way Girardi was going to throw away an opportunity to manage the Yankees next season.

As Baltimore said on an earlier comment, Mattingly will be the Yankees manager next year. Girardi made a smart career move by not burying himself in this mess, and there certainly will be enough openings coming up that he would be better off with.

The Orioles are not a small market team, and they are not broke. They've just made some poor personnel choices as far as which players they go after, and other players reasonably have decided that Baltimore is not the place where they want to play. Until the Orioles improve the organization from within or land a marquee star or two that actually pan out and play up to their potential, they will keep on disappointing fans. Girardi or not, they still would have had important decisions to make.

Yeah, Angelos is rich and the team makes money... in fact, in the mid 90s, when they were competitive, they filled the seats reguarly, and camden is a great place to see a game...not to mention inner harbor being a great place to begin with...

195,229,045 yankees payroll

82,000,000 orioles payroll 113229045 is the difference

116,115,819 mets payroll 30,507,000 Marlins payroll

85608819 difference

This is not much more of a diffence so it is obvious that compared to the yankees and redsox the marlins are as wealthy as the orioles based on subtraction from the top team in the division.

I hope this argument makes sense
