The Baseball Writers Association of America awarded the Florida Marlins' ex-manager Joe Girardi the National League Manager of the Year award, and awarded Jim Leyland of the Detroit Tigers the American League Manager of the Year award.
Girardi received 18 of the 32 first-place votes and had 111 points, finishing well ahead of the New York Mets' manager Willie Randolph, who only received eight first place votes. Leyland also won handily, securing 19 of the 28 first-place votes for 118 total points beating out Ron Gardenhire of the Minnesota Twins, who only received 9 first place ballots and earned 93 points.
For Leyland this was his third manager of the year award. Leyland also won the award when in 1990 and 1992 for his work with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Leyland joins Tony La Russa and Bobby Cox as the third manager to win the award in both leagues.
