Gilberto was a member of the World Cup winning Brazil side for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. He was also a member of the 2006 Brazil World Cup team.
On July 17, 2008 he left Arsenal after a six-season spell with the North London side that saw him win The Premier League title, two FA Cups and two Community Shields. He joined Greek side Panathinaikos.
