The Giants have defeated the Chicago Bears 21-16 in a game where the offense looked absolutely stagnant for three quarters of play. The Giants started the game with a nice drive that carried them all of the way down near the red zone, then Eli Manning picked up where he left off last week and threw an interception directly at Brian Urlacher. As soon as the ball hit the hands of Urlacher I am sure that every Giants fan in the country was thinking they were in for a repeat performance from Eli Manning after last weeks Minnesota debacle. If you thought that as a Giants fan you were absolutely correct.
Eli followed the interception with another turnover later in the game as the Giants approached the Bears redzone. He wound up to throw the ball and it just slipped out, the play was very Bubby Bristeresque. Later in the game the Giants were driving and had a chance to bring the game within two points when Eli made a great play to avoid a sack but then made an equally bad play by throwing a terrible jump ball to Plaxico Burress in the corner of the endzone. Eli never really got started this game and continued to look disenchanted while doing so. I have been a supporter of Eli Manning since day one but with how bad the offense has looked lately I think that at some point in this game it would have been nice to see Eli Manning show some emotion, either throw his helmet on the sideline or hit himself on the helmet, I don't care anything just a sign that he has a pulse and cares about the game. All of my thoughts of wishing Eli would show emotion disappeared as the game went on and Eli led the Giants to a comeback victory which he has become so accustomed to doing in his few years in the league. Eli's demeanor causes people to have a double standard when thinking of him, on one hand he looks uninterested and almost like he doesn't care when he throws an interception and understandably so this gets under the skin of fans and announcers alike. But when the Giants are playing well Eli's lack of emotion is seen as calmness under pressure and poise. I hate when people talk about Eli's demeanor because they are usually the same people that love his calmness when he is under fire. I, however; fell into the trap today of going from criticizing Eli for not caring about an interception to loving the fact that he was calm in his audibles and throws when the game was on the line. Eli stepped up big in the fourth quarter and led the Giants on two touchdown drives for the win.
In Giants news that doesn't have to do with Eli Manning, Derrick Ward broke his fibula and is likely to be out for the season. This injury will hurt the depth at running back especially with Jacobs still ailing from a hamstring injury. They will hope for Jacobs to return next week otherwise Reuben Droughns will likely get the start. Also, Plaxico Burress' ankle continues to get worse week by week. He is almost completely ineffectual when running routes and is doing the team more harm then good by being on the field, I would suggest that the Giants sit him out and hope that he gets healthy for the playoffs ( assuming they make it). I think that the Giants would actually get better by sitting out Plaxico and playing Sinorice Moss/ David Tyree more. I say David Tyree because him and Eli seem to have an excellent connection on the rare oppurtunities that Tyree gets to be in the game. Their rapport probably developed in Eli's rookie season when he took a lot of snaps with the second team which featured Tyree. He also works with Tyree a lot in the off season because Plaxico, Amani Toomer, and Jeremy Shockey do not train with the team. The Giants defense played excellent today with the exception of the first drive for the Bears and a scattering of deep balls. Michael Johnson a 7th round pick at safety is showing that he was a steal and playing excellent in his rookie season. The game ball for the Giants this week should go to Jeff Feagles and the Giants kick coverage team for being able to neutralize Devin Hester with an excellent display of directional kicking.
I am sorry if this article is poorly written, my heart is still beating fast from that Giants victory.
