Giants To Keep Coughlin-Big Mistake

10

by user Alanschech

The New York Giants have announced today that coach Tom Coughlin will not be a casualty of their lackluster 8-8 season. Without a major player overhaul, this decision is a big mistake.

One reason is that he clearly lost this team. For all of the distractions this season, the comments that have been made in the press, Jeremy Shockey talking about the team being outcoached, Burress and Strahan's feud that began on WFAN, and the countless other situations that showed that the players are running this asylum. Them coming back to win their last game was more a statement for sending Tiki Barber to his final playoff then coming together for the coach. They were not motivated to play for this guy anymore.

Another reason is the lack of Eli Manning's progress. He is not only not getting better, he is actually getting worse. Watch his games, and you will see Eli's issue when being rushed. He gets happy feet, and never steps up in the pocket when he is under fire. He throws off his back foot, and his throws lack a great deal of accuracy. Watch his brother, that never happens. This comes from a lack of coaching. Kevin Gilbride has done nothing for this guy.

This is just an opinion, but this group is not going to play for Coughlin. They don't like his style, and they gave up on him already this year. He comes back, the team will not do any better, unless Jeremy Shockey and the other thugs do not return.

Heard an interesting theory today. If the Giants fire Coughlin, and hire someone else with say a four year deal, then they lose out on.....Bill Cowher. So give Coughlin an extension, Cowher takes his year off, and next year is the new Giants coach.

I agree that would be an ideal situation, but 2 things we don't know. One, will Coughlin have a big year next year, and stay longer. 2-Does Cowher want to return?

and 3. Would Cower coach the Giants? Let's face it, Eli is regressing, Tiki is gone, Strahan, Toomer, and Burress are all getting old. This is a team that clearly needs an overhaul.

To be honest, I think this move makes a lot of sense. You're correct in saying the team is aging, but Coughlin drafted Jacobs (and will probably add another significant back in april) and has built, what i think, is a talented and good team. 2005 proved that they can be good. Why not take one more shot and see if he can work his magic with the current team. If it fails, they will need to go through a significant rebuilding anyway... Also, if it does fail, I get to enjoy another hilarious season of players and coaches calling out eachother, many many stupid penalties and potentially another eagles NFC east title...

Ssselmo, your point was raised in the discussion I heard, and the answer was it didn't matter. The Giants made the playoffs this year, anything short of a Super Bowl next year would justify his firing. Plus, Eli Manning has regressed this year and that's a direct reflection to Coughlin's offensive scheme.

Coughlin is only staying because John Mara and Stephen Tisch has no clue what they are doing so they are having blind faith on Coughlin. They are scared to hire some new. You think the late Wellington Mara would keep Coughlin?

Believe it or not, Wellington's son, John made the recommendation to hire Coughlin with the idea that he is the next Belichick. LMAO!

What better options are available? There's not too many. I don't think he did a great job- obviously not during the 2nd half, but I don't see much out there that I'd rather have as a replacement.

The Philadelphia Eagle would like to thank the New York Giants for continued support in the Eagles NFC East dynasty. The future for the Eagles in the division looks as bright has it has since 2001!

Ken Wisenhunt, Mike Tomlin, Ron Riveria, or other young assistants can't be worse, right. Get someone new. Coughlin is a lousy head coach. It showed this year.
