Born on August 21, 1920 in Brush Prairie, Washington, Gerry Staley (Gerald Lee Staley) played for the St. Louis Cardinals, New York Yankees, Cincinnati Reds, Chicago White Sox, Kansas City Athletics and Detroit Tigers over the course of his 15 year career. Staley broke into the bigs on April 20, 1947 with the St. Louis Cardinals, and put up a 6.92 ERA in 52 innings pitched in 1948, his rookie year.

There is some disagreement on what was Gerry Staley's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1953, when he posted a 3.99 ERA, won 18 games and struck out 88 batters. However, others believe that it was 1959, when he posted a 2.24 ERA, notched 14 saves and struck out 54 batters.
