Germany Schaefer (William Herman Schaefer) was born on February 4, 1876 in Chicago, Illinois. He made his Major League debut on October 5, 1901 for the Chicago Orphans. In 1902, his rookie year, he hit .196 with 0 home runs and 14 RBI. Schaefer played for the Chicago Orphans, Chicago Cubs, Detroit Tigers, Washington Senators, Newark Peppers, New York Yankees and Cleveland Indians over the course of his 15 year career.

Most people believe that Germany Schaefer's best season was 1908, when he stole 40 bases and knocked in 52 runs.
