German sports fans might have their eyes fixed on the World Cup, but they might soon have a snooker hero to cheer.
Lasse Munstermann (Germany) is through to the semi-finals of the European Championship in Constatnta, Romania after an impressive win over talented young Jamie Jones (Wales) on Wednesday.
Two-times German champion, 27-year-old Munstermann played on the Tour in 2000/01 season and won just won match but has improved significantly as a player since then. Victory in this event would be the biggest of his career to date.
In today’s semi-finals, he faces Jeff Cunty from Scunthorpe who saw off Gerrit Bij de Leij (Holland) 5-3 in the quarters.
Alex Borg (Malta), who won the event last year in Poland, is through to the last four again after easily beating Yannick Poulain (France) 5-1.
He now faces Kurt Maflin (England), originally from London but now living in Norway, who whitewashed John Torpey 5-0.
The tournament is one of the most important in amateur snooker, and the German has voiced his desire to return to the Main Tour in future.
