Gerald Small (Gerald David Small) was born on August 10, 1956 in Washington, District Of Columbia. After going to high school at Desert (Edwards Air Force Base, CA), Small attended San Jose State University. Small made his professional debut in the NFL in 1978 with the Miami Dolphins. He played for the Miami Dolphins and Atlanta Falcons over the course of his 7 year career.

Most people believe that 1978 was Gerald Small's best year, as he picked off 4 passes and ran back an interception for a touchdown.
