I was born and raised in the small town of Storm Lake, Iowa. In town we had a local baseball team (farm club - maybe AAA) called the Storm Lake White Caps. Young athletes from around the country came and played to display their potential to major league scouts and, since we had a fairly large house in town, my parents offered rooms to rent to these players. For me, this was very exciting as I was ten or eleven at the time and loved sports. One of those players was George Shaw, whose name at the time meant nothing to us until one of his roommates showed us a Sport Illustrated articles naming him one of the top college quarterback prospects in the nation. Some of the players returned to play for the White Caps in future summers but I don't remember that George did.
I remember him as a very nice guy who was quiet and very humble, considering his abilities. I continued to follow his career but lost track of him after he left Professional Football. About five years ago we moved to Portland where I was reminded of him when I read an historical information board at Hayward Field at the U. of O. while I was there for a track meet. I "googled" him recently and was saddened to discover that he died.
