George Altman (George Lee Altman) was born on March 20, 1933 in Goldsboro, North Carolina. He made his Major League debut on April 11, 1959 for the Chicago Cubs. In 1959, his rookie year, he hit .245 with 12 home runs and 47 RBI. Altman played for the Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals and New York Mets over the course of his 9 year career.

There is some disagreement on what was George Altman's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1961, when he slugged 27 home runs, hit for a .303 average and knocked in 96 runs. However, others believe that it was 1962, when he slugged 22 home runs, hit for a .318 average and knocked in 74 runs.
