Gene Smith (Henry Eugene Smith) was born on September 25, 1905 in Montgomery, Alabama. After going to high school at Columbus (GA), Smith attended the University of Georgia. Smith made his professional debut in the NFL in 1930 with the Portsmouth Spartans. He played for the Portsmouth Spartans for his entire 1 year career.
