Born on November 13, 1947 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Gene Garber (Henry Eugene Garber) played for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Kansas City Royals, Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves over the course of his 19 year career. Garber broke into the bigs on June 17, 1969 with the Pittsburgh Pirates, and put up a 4.24 ERA in 152.2 innings pitched in 1973, his rookie year.

There is some disagreement on what was Gene Garber's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1982, when he posted a 2.34 ERA, notched 30 saves and struck out 68 batters. However, others believe that it was 1978, when he posted a 2.15 ERA, notched 25 saves and struck out 85 batters.
