[edit] Biography

Gene, who began his coaching career with the Cubs in 1979, returned to the club in 2003 as the first base coach. This will be his 20th season on a Major League coaching staff. Was named hitting coach prior to the 2005 season. As a player, he went to the postseason with Pittsburgh Pirates following the 1971, 1972 and 1974 campaigns winning a World Series ring with the Pirates in 1971 as a coach, he has been in the postseason in 1997, 2000, 2002 and 2003. His charitable endeavors include assisting the Sickle Cell Anemia Foundation and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Attended Contra Costa Junior College in San Pablo, CA.

[edit] Coaching Career

Gene has been a major league coach with the Cubs (1979- 1981 and 2003-2005), Houston Astros (1988), Seattle Mariners (1989- 1992), Milwaukee Brewers (1993-1994) and San Francisco Giants (1997- 2002). After finishing his 10-year big league playing career with the Cubs in 1979, he remained with the team as first base coach under manager Bob Kennedy. Joined the Astros' organization in 1982 as a roving minor league hitting instructor a position he held through 1987. Was the Astros' hitting coach in 1988. Spent six seasons as a hitting coach in the American League with the Mariners and Brewers before joining the Giants' organization in 1995 as the minor league hitting coordinator began a six-year stint as San Francisco's hitting coach and outfield coach in 1997. Guided National League Most Valuable Player Award winners Jeff Kent (2000) and Barry Bonds (2001 and 2002).

[edit] Playing Career

Gene played professionally from 1966-1979 spending 10 seasons in the majors with Pittsburgh Pirates (1970-1974), the New York Mets (1975), Texas Rangers (1976) and the Chicago Cubs (1977-1979). The former outfielder hit .277 in 870 regularseason games. Went to the postseason with Pittsburgh following the 1971, 1972 and 1974 campaigns winning a World Series ring with the Pirates in 1971. Had his best big league season in 1972, batting .334 in 107 games. Joined the Cubs in 1977 after being acquired in a February trade with Texas for pitcher Darold Knowles.. Hit .274 in his two-plus seasons with the Cubs. Retired during the 1979 campaign and took over the club's first base coaching duties.

Most people believe that Gene Clines's best season was 1976, when he hit for a .276 average.
