Gene Baker (Eugene Walter Baker) was born on June 15, 1925 in Davenport, Iowa. He made his Major League debut on September 20, 1953 for the Chicago Cubs. In 1954, his rookie year, he hit .275 with 13 home runs and 61 RBI. Baker played for the Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates over the course of his 8 year career.

Most people believe that Gene Baker's best season was 1955, when he knocked in 52 runs.

Baker, a second baseman, teamed with Hall of Famer Ernie Banks (at shortstop) to form the Major Leagues' first African-American keystone combo.
