Gene Alford (Eugene Morris Alford) was born on April 3, 1905 in Rising Star, Texas. After going to high school at Daniel Baker Academy (Eastland, TX) and Rising Star (TX), Alford attended Sul Ross State University and Texas Technical University. Alford made his professional debut in the NFL in 1931 with the Portsmouth Spartans. He played for the Portsmouth Spartans and Cincinnati-St. Louis Reds-Gunners over the course of his 4 year career.

Most people believe that 1933 was Gene Alford's best year.
