Gary Ward (Gary Lamell Ward) was born on December 6, 1953 in Los Angeles, California. He made his Major League debut on September 3, 1979 for the Minnesota Twins. In 1981, his rookie year, he hit .264 with 3 home runs and 29 RBI. Ward played for the Minnesota Twins, Texas Rangers, New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers over the course of his 12 year career.

There is some disagreement on what was Gary Ward's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1982, when he slugged 28 home runs, hit for a .289 average and knocked in 91 runs. However, others believe that it was 1985, when he slugged 15 home runs, stole 26 bases, hit for a .287 average and knocked in 70 runs.
