Gary Sheffield - Sauce of the Weak!

by Barronandtheroc

(Roc) Gary Sheffield trashed anyone he could think of on "Real Sports on HBO" Friday night. Sheffield said that Jeter "ain't all that black" and Joe Torre and the Yankees discriminate black players. Wow, the man has lost his mind, I will not even comment on this except for the fact there is no way in hell Joe Torre is a racist, just not happening. Shef was ' later asked if he thought Joe Torre was racist, to which he replied "No". Huh? what? Gary, please check out the meaning of Racism.

Shef later went on to say he hates cleats, because why is the only black part of the uniform the one you step on? This is big boy sports Gary, you can't make up rumors because a coach was mean to you, especially irresponsible ones. He thinks he is a badass, and this is why I think the Media should give him a "wuss" like name, how about "Gare-Bear"?

Headline "GareBear to fight every MLB Player that looked at him the past year". Not so tough, now are we GareBear.

GareBear - WEAK SAUCE.

(Barron) Roc, I agree with you 200%...Gary is WEAK SAUCE. When he was on the Yanks, I was a Sheff fan...lets face it...the guy can hit the ball (like he is proving this year in Detroit). Now he says that Torre is a racist...sorry he treats the black players different from the white players...not racist (which says it all right there doesn't it).

Ummm Gary...let me remind you of a few things about Joe Torre. First, Joe went out of his way to get you into the post-season lineup. He risked his job by putting you at first, changing the overall karma of a team that was on fire. He dropped A-Rod (he's not black) to the 8-hole. You could have been sat on the bench and no one would have said a thing. Also, Joe Torre is a big part of the reason Willie Randolph is now the manager of the Mets. Another thing...Joe Torre's best friend is Bob Gibson...enough said on that one.

And tell your friend Kenny Lofton that he is not helping your cause. There is a reason that both of you have played on what seems like every major league team.

HOWEVER....my additional problem (and it truly pains me to say this) is with Derek Jeter...the Captain. Derek was asked about Sheff's comments about Joe and Derek came back with a no comment. Ummm Derek??? This is YOUR TEAM...YOUR MANAGER...he holds your bat when you aren't hitting, he and George made you the Captain of the greatest franchise in sports. I ask you WWTD(What would Thurmon Do)?? Thurmon Munson was a real Captain...he would have defended Torre to the end, and then probably would have told Sheffield that he can't wait to see him in NY again. Then Guidry would have put a fastball right between the numbers on Sheff's back!!!!! Derek ...STEP UP AND LEAD THIS TEAM!!!!!!!!

It really hurts me to say this, but my Sauce of the Weak is: #2, The Captain, Derek Jeter...

What!? Derek Jeter would NOT be a person to do that. I thought he would speak his mind. I guess he's that shocked that someone so stupid could say such a thing. Or maybe he's afraid that if he says what he thinks is right, Shef will cry.

Sheffield did trash Barry Bonds which is something most major leaguers don't have the guts to do. Of all the players alleged to have used steroids Bonds seems to have had the biggest change in his appearance. I usually don't agree with Sheffield but in this case he was dead on. Sammy Sosa is another player that bulked up considerably from the player he was early in his career. I would love to see the weights of players like Palmeiro, Giambi, McGwire and Canseco earlier in their careers and what it was in more recent years. And would love to see a head shot of Bonds without his hat on when he was with the Pirates and the way he looks today with the Giants. Sheffield may be right about Bonds but off base in his other comments.

Gary Sheffield is not the most eloquent of speakers, but I think there is some merit to what he says. It has been proven that people are treated differently based on skin color in all other facets of life, so why would baseball be any different. Just because someone is not an overt racist, does not mean that they don't treat people of other races differently. It may be subtle and subconscious, but it is often the most insidious and harmful.

The fact that whenever Gary says anything angry white men come out of the woodwork to jump all over what he says and refute it should speak volumes.

Also, I think what he could have said more delicately about Jeter was that because he has a lighter skin pigmentation he doesn't necessarily fit the perceived notion of what "black" is, and, therefore, is not subject to the same stereotypes and stigma. Which I think has some affect on how he is treated by greater society. I believe if he were generally perceived as a "black man" his playboyism would be viewed in a much more negative light.
