Gary Matthews (Gary Nathaniel Matthews, Sr.) was born on July 5, 1950 in San Fernando, California. He made his Major League debut on September 6, 1972 for the San Francisco Giants. In 1973, his rookie year, he hit .300 with 12 home runs and 58 RBI. Matthews played for the San Francisco Giants, Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs and Seattle Mariners over the course of his 16 year career.

Most people believe that Gary Matthews's best season was 1979, when he slugged 27 home runs, hit for a .304 average and knocked in 90 runs.
