Gary never played major junior hockey in Canada. Instead he attended McMaster University in Hamilton before transferring to the University of Toronto. His play at McMaster was noticed by Pittsburgh Penguins scout Rudy Migay who recommended Gary for a tryout in 1973.
After retiring from his playing career, Gary coached the AHL Hershey Bears from 1981-82 through 1984-85.

- McMaster University's "Athlete of the Decade" for the 1960s, playing football and hockey, twice being named most valuable player on the hockey team.
- Inducted into McMaster University Hall of Fame, 1986.
