Gary Hammond (Gary Allen Hammond) was born on July 31, 1949 in Port Arthur, Texas. After going to high school at Thomas Jefferson (Port Arthur, TX), Hammond attended Southern Methodist University. Hammond made his professional debut in the NFL in 1973 with the St. Louis Cardinals. He played for the St. Louis Cardinals for his entire 4 year career.

Most people believe that 1974 was Gary Hammond's best year.
