Gary Collins
[edit] BiographyGary Collins was the fourth overall pick of the 1962 NFL draft by the Cleveland Browns out of the University of Maryland. AS a rookie, he was implemented at first as the starting punter and eventually settled in as a flanker setting records during his career at both positions. On a team that included All-Time greats Jim Brown and Paul Warfield, he was the main catalyst in the Browns' 1964 NFL Championship victory and earned game MVP honors by hauling in 3 touchdown receptions in the shocking upset over the favored Baltimore Colts, 27-0. His three TD catches in the 1964 NFL Championship Game is forever a NFL Title game record and has only been matched in a Super Bowl by the immortal Jerry Rice who accomplished the feat twice (XXIV, XXIX). When Collins retired in 1971, only 3 players (Don Hutson, Tommy McDonald and Art Powell) in the NFL had more career TD receptions than his 70 (also Don Maynard and Lance Alworth including their AFL stats). Collins also was crucial on special teams and led the NFL in yards per punt in the 1964 season with an average of 46.7 yards per punt.
