Gary Beban
[edit] Biography
Gary Beban (Gary Joseph Beban) was born on August 5, 1946 in Redwood City, California. After going to high school at Sequoia (Redwood City, CA), Beban attended the University of California - Los Angeles. Beban made his professional debut in the NFL in 1968 with the Washington Redskins. He played for the Washington Redskins for his entire 2 year career.
Considered a huge NFL Draft bust of the last 1960s, Gary Beban, born on August 5, 1946 in Redwood City, Calif., played only two seasons in the NFL after winning a heated and controversial Heisman Trophy battle as a UCLA Bruin in 1967.
Many people believe it was the fact that Beban was Caucasion and his competitor, O.J. Simpson, was African-American, others said it was that Beban was a quarterback and Simpson a running back, and still others said it was because Beban was a senior and Simpson a junior.
Beban was drafted in the first round of the 1968 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins but retired after just two years.
