Game 3 of Mets-Phillies Series Ends Amid Controversy

Unfortunately I don't live in an area that gets the game and can only watch updates via CBS Sports or ESPN GameCasts, which are ridiculously slow.  The Philadelphia Phillies won the game 3-2. Jamie Moyer gets the win and Oliver Perez the loss, with Brett Myers earning his 13th save.  The controversy was on the final play of the game when Shawn Green pinch hit for RP Jorge Sosa with 1 out. Endy Chavez was on 3rd and Marlon Anderson was at 1st. Green hit a soft grounder to Jimmy Rollins who fielded it and threw to Tadahito Iguchi at 2nd to get Anderson.  From what I'm hearing there was little (possibly no) chance that they could have gotten Green at 1st so Chavez would have scored to tie the game.  HOWEVER, Marlon Anderson slid into Iguchi and was called for interference, hence a double play...game over; Phillies win.

Was anyone watching the game that has an unbiased opinion on what happened?  Was it interference?  Or should we still be in the bottom of the 9th?

Regardless, the game is over and the Phillies have taken 3 straight from the Mets and cut their NL East lead to 3 games.  The 4th and final game of the series is tomorrow at 1:05pm. Orlando Hernandez (9-4, 3.07) opposes Kyle Lohse (7-12, 4.47) as the Phillies look to sweep.

Baseball is weird. I'm sure Baseball Tonight and SportsCenter will overanalyze it tonight and tomorrow morning.

I saw the play...Marlon Anderson clearly pushed iguchi while sliding to the left of the bag...while normally this would just be a routine attempt to breakup a DP...the fact that anderson used his hands to, essentially, shove him, is what merited the call... It was the right call...

That was a correct call. Marlon truly made a bone-headed mistake right there. Also as bad as A-Rod's gaffe in the WOlrd Series a few years back.

As a Met fan, I could argue that it wasn't interference...but I would be wrong. They're killing me. I'm sure I'll be dead by the end of this season.

Chris, what play are you talking about?

To the best of my knowledge, A-Rod has never played in a world series

If you're talking about the ALCS "Slap," then i'm not sure how it was boneheaded. That particular play was illegal and he was rightfully called out, however as a baseball player, your goal (in that situation ) was to get to first safely, by any means, and he attempted to do the right thing...it certainly didn't cost his team any more than him being tug out normally...

And tell me, why are the Mets trying to make this thing a race. The Phillies are fatally flawed because of pitching, or lack thereof. But the Mets are making so many mental mistakes that the lack of Phillies pitching may be overcome.

Definitely interference...shouldn't really even be any controversy around it. Looks like Anderson's trying to start football season a week early...

It was interference, but as Harry Kalas said on the call, he didn't even need to go after him, the ball was hit so slowly there was no chance they would have turned it. Had he just slid straight into the bag, instead of hooking toward the third base side, he may have gotten by.

If he slides with his feet towards Iguchi and his upper body reaching back towards the bag, that's legal, and he can still kind of disrupt Iguchi's turn. But when he uses his hands to shove Iguchi, that's clearly interference.

Exactly guys...Kalas even said, Gooch had no shot at the DP...Marlon made a dumb, dumb play...it was interference because anderson made it interference...even if he wouldn't have done anythign at all, gooch would have most likely not made the play to second...
