GMAC Bowl Shenanigans

Call this my Lloyd Christmas moment (Did you hear that? We've landed on the moon!), but I didn't hear anything about this when it first came out back in January. Neither did USA Today for that matter, which is where I first saw this in last Friday's paper.
Apparently the GMAC Bowl is moving to January 7th.
For everyone who isn't familiar with that date, January 7th is the day before the BCS Championship game and the second day of the NFL Playoffs. The GMAC Bowl is played between two non-champion non-BCS schools, which means that there will be about 8 people watching the game.
But this is a shame for the GMAC Bowl because at least with their original Dec. 20th date, they would've had that "new bowl smell" of being one of the first bowls. Instead, they get sandwiched during the BCS games and the NFL playoffs. Nobody, outside the good people of Mobile and whomever is playing in this year's game, is going to care. Well, except for ESPN, which I will bet is going to hype this game so much it will hurt.
Because ESPN/ABC lost rights to the BCS championship games, they had to find something to replace it. I imagine the conversation went something like this:
ESPN HQ: We need something to show on show on January 7th, and we chose your game over figure skating and World Series of Poker reruns. GMAC Bowl: We're flattered. Let us get back to you on this to see if it's ok. ESPN HQ: Um... actually, we've already made that decision for you. You don't have a choice in the matter. GMAC Bowl: Do we get any more money out of this? ESPN HQ: No. Just be lucky you're not paying us to show this game. GMAC Bowl: (sigh) Where do we sign?
Anyone who doesn't believe that college football's postseason isn't about money is either stupid or lying out their teeth. I'm looking at you Myles Brand.
