Future's so bright I gotta wear shades

For the record:

Joe Mauer - 23 years old
Francisco Liriano - 22 years old

As Timbuk 3 would say, the future's so bright I gotta wear shades.

Liriano, again, was brilliant. He only threw 86 pitches (and much props to Gardy for not putting him in for another inning in a 7-run game - save all the innings you can), but he went 7 innings, striking out, and giving up only 2 solo HR (5 hits total). As with his last start, an outing like this actually raised his ERA all the way up to 2.21. By the way, if my calculations are correct, he has a very good chance after his next start to have enough innings to qualify for the ERA title, where he would have a huge lead as of today.

As for Joe Mauer, who's becoming kind of a big deal, was 5/5 on the day, or 9/10 the last 2 games in case you haven't been paying attention. His batting average is all the way up to .389, leading at least one guy to start to ask, 'What if?' Meanwhile, he's moved up to 3rd place on the AL All-Star voting for Catchers, behind only Jason Varitek and Ivan Rodriguez. It's worth mentioning that Joe has been better in every facet of the game than these two players. In other words, VOTE FOR JOE MAUER.

By the way, very nice article on Yahoo! about Joe Mauer, which you should read if you have a chance.

The Twins go for another sweep on Wednesday as they send Johan Santana to the mound to take on Odalis Perez in the battle of the lefties. Johan currently sits at 8-4 with a 2.75 ERA, while Odalis is 4-2 with a 6.33 ERA. The Twins would seem to have the advantage on paper, but we all know these games aren't played on paper but by the little men in our TV sets. Hopefully the little men in Twins uniforms continue their torrid pace!

Thank You Brian Sabean

I drafted Mauer in the middle rounds of fantasy. I think everyone was expecting a slump, but he's certainly not slumping. He's a great hitter AND he plays catcher, what more could you want...

Too bad the Twins won't be able to afford to keep their studs for the long term. They'd better win it all in the next 2 or 3 years before the financial window closes.

I'm tired of hearing about the Twins future. They've been crowing about the Twins young talent for years and what has it brought? A few playoff appearances, which is certainly nice, but is being a punching bacg for the Yankees again worth looking forward to?

3 straight playoff appearances in a pretty good deal for a small-market team like the Twins. Sure, they only made it out of the first round one of the 3 years, but the playoffs are a crapshoot. The thing about all the Twins talent is that the pitching has been there, but now the hitting is getting to the Big Leagues and producing (Mauer, Morneau, Kubel, Cuddyer, etc.) Now, they're always strapped for cash, but they've got Radke's big contract coming off the books after this year, Hunter is still in the air there, and they'll soon be getting more revenue from the new ballpark. Santana is locked up, Liriano is 5 years away from FA, Mauer is 3, etc. They won't be able to resign everyone, but they should have enough money to resign the stars.

Don't get me wrong, I like the Twins and the way they've developed players is great... But when you have the pitching they do, their early playoff exits are BAD. They should be winning those 5 game series easy.

santana was pretty good in the alds in 2004, but they had radke and silva to back him up..in 2003, it was radke, loshe...radke is solid, but come on

Again, I don't ever think losing in 4 hard-fought games to the team with the highest payroll a real BAD loss. Sure they had Santana, but look at their other starters those years - Radke was a constant, but he's far from a dominating force. Joe Mays? Rick Reed? Carlos Silva? Kenny Rogers? All decent pitchers at the time or still are, but not barnburners by any mean.
