A look at the sports week's biggest losers…
by Christof

Welcome to a mid Friday afternoon edition of the Friday Fryer, where we take a look at who was the sports world's biggest idiot / loser this week. Major League Baseball is now in the home stretch. This is providing me with ample nominees for the Chair. So without further ado, let’s go take a look at our three finalists and, of course, the person or team who is being dipped into the Fryer....

THE FINALISTS
Notre Dame Football
The Fighting Irish once again earn a Friday Fryer nomination. This time it is because they were beaten by 38 by the University of Michigan. Mind you, both teams were starting true freshman quarterbacks.

It is not out the realm of possibility that the Irish will start the season at least 0-8. With games against Michigan State, Purdue and USC on the horizon, things are only going to get worse. Notre Dame’s first win may comes against Duke, however, with Duke beating Northwestern, that game is not a sure W.

It is one thing to lose. It is another thing to lose in embarrassing fashion. The latter has been the case for Notre Dame this year. A lot of this has to do with preparation. Hence, the coaches deserve a great deal of blame. However, with Charlie Weiss in only his second year of a 10 year contract, changes are not going to be made where they are needed the most.

Notre Dame has been living off of its reputation for nearly two decades in football. At some point, reality is going to set in. Simply put, Notre Dame is not a good football program any longer. This fact and the way the team is currently playing earns Notre Dame at least a Friday Fryer nomination.

The Philadelphia Eagles
Two games into the 2007 NFL season, and the Eagles season is on the brink of collapse. The head coach seems to have lost his focus and attention to detail, along with the locker room. The star quarterback looks like he physically cannot be a star any longer in the league. In addition, he is being hit hard by the media for comments he made in an interview. This is not good, for Donovan McNabb is known to be extremely sensitive.

The Eagles had high hopes coming into this season. Many expected a run to the Super Bowl. Now, the team is running to avoid an 0-3 start. With the upstart Detroit Lions coming to town, a 0-3 start is more than likely to occur.

It is my opinion that we are witnessing the beginning of the end of the Andy Reid / Donovan McNabb era in Eagles history. I am expecting to see either man back with the Eagles in 2008. This era, if it does come to an end, was very good, but it was not good enough.

If this is the end of an era for the Eagles, it will require them to re-tool. More than likely, the re-tooling will not take very long. Nonetheless, the fact that the Eagles did not win a Super Bowl during this time, and the team’s awful play so far in 2007, has earned the Philadelphia Eagles a Friday Fryer nomination.

The New York Mets
Just think, the Mets are not only losing on the field, but they are also losing off the field, in the race for the weekly Friday Fryer Chair. This week, the Mets have gone 1-6. There 6.5 game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies is now down to 1.5. The Mets were not only swept by the Phillies, but also lost a series to the hopeless Washington nationals.

The Mets are currently playing the Florida Marlins. It is a four game series. Game one was last night. The Mets had a three run lead going into the bottom of the ninth. When the smoke cleared, the Marlins had tied the game, causing it to go into extra innings. Actually, it was only one extra inning, for the Fish finish off the hapless Mets in the tenth.

The Mets, on September 12, had a seven game lead in the NL East. No team in MLB history has had a seven game lead this late in a season and failed to win the division. The Mets are trying hard to be the first.

There are serious issues with this Mets team. First, there is no chemistry among the players. Second, the Mets are mentally weak this year. When they face an ounce of adversity, they wilt like flowers in the hot summer sun. Third, the manager is refusing to light a fire under his under-achieving team.

The only saving grace for the Mets comes from the Phillies. This is because the Phillies have a horrible pitching staff. But for the Phillies pitching staff, the Mets would already be looking up tee times in the off-season. Nonetheless, the Mets may not be saved by the Phillies pitchers. Therefore, the Mets earn themselves a Friday Fryer Chair nomination. They may actually get the Chair next week.

AND THE LOSER IS . . .
The Boston Red Sox
Busted!

Mets fans are thanking Boston! Why? Because the Boston Red Sox are falling as fast as the Mets are, and rock bottom is not yet in sight. Right now, Boston is ahead of the New York Yankees by a game and a half. Once upon a time, the Red Sox had a 14.5 game lead over the Yankees. Oh my, shades of 1978 are re-appearing.

The Red Sox beat out the Mets for the Chair this week because of three reasons. First, they have much more talent than the Mets. Second, the Yankees are positioned better to win the AL East than the Phillies are to win the NL East. Third, Boston should be able to withstand these difficulties better than the Mets. This is because the club won a World Series only three years ago. Unfortunately, the Red Sox are crumbling, and doing so quickly.

There is only 10 days left in the 2007 season. It will not surprise me to see the Yankees win the AL East. Actually, I would say they are the favorites to do so. Since the Red Sox have been in first since April, and are now playing like a minor league team, they do earn the Friday Fryer Chair this week. Whether they can win it again next week, that will be determined soon.

Until next Friday, AMF!

Wow, I thought the Mets were a shoe in. The Red Sox will definitely win the Wild Card if the Yanks take them for the division -- can't say the same for the Mets

So would I, but is that logical? After losing, let's say, 10 of 15, they aren't going to be on the hot streak that the Yanks are currently going to be on. That's why I think it's going to be the Angels and Yankees facing each other in the ALCS.

The Mets week... they led virtually all of those games, and suffered bullpen collapses in all of them, full of terrible errors. The paranoid Red Sox fans may be whining that the Yankees might catch them, but their season continues no matter what.

The Mets collapse would be one of, if not the worst in history.

The Mets are a game behind the Padres, the wild card leader.

The Red Sox are also playing somewhat decent teams, while the Mets are playing the Marlins and Nationals.

The Phillies and Yankees chances of pulling out the division... I like the Phillies chances alot better.

And what does a World Series three years ago have to do with anything... that would mean that the Cardinals should be roaring back any second now.

Here's the thing: the Red Sox have actually been playing pretty good baseball as of late, but it's a couple of mistakes or opportunities that Red Sox batters miss that have made them lose the big lead that they had about a week ago. For example, take the game where David Ortiz popped out with the bases loaded. If he hit that ball in a gap or any part in the outfield, that would've won the Red Sox the game, but it didn't. Another example: Terry Francona had a brain fart I guess, since he put Eric Gagne in instead of (let's say) Manny Delcarmen. That was a managerial mistake, in my opinion, since the baseball world knows that Eric Gagne should not be put in unless you either WANT to lose a game or you have a 5+ run lead, and you take him out if he gives up two straight hits/walks. Finally, the example of Curt Schilling. He pitched very well last time, but he was kept in too long, and Derek Jeter ended up winning the game that night on an eighth inning blast. The Mets, on the other hand, like you said Rewind, have just lost it. I don't know how, but they've lost it. I guess they're having the same problem that they had in the middle of the season where they couldn't even win a ballgame. We'll see how it plays out when the season ends.

The Mets are potentially losing a post-season berth. The Red Sox are on the verge of losing a divisional title. I think there's a difference between those two.
