Friday Fryer (September 15, 2006)

Yo Yo Yo! It may be raining outside, but it is Friday. College & pro football is on tap for this weekend, and the Wild Card races in both baseball leagues are heating up. But before the fun, we need to see who gets the Chair in the weekly Friday Fryer Challenge.

The first finalist was nominated by Alex Holowczak. The nominee is FIA Stewards from the Formula One. It seems like there was a little issue at last week’s 2006 Italian Grand Prix. According to Alex, a racer by the name of Massa was on a “flying-lap” (i.e. setting a qualifying time for race position), and that another race, Alonso, had to get around the track before the clock hit 0:00 to start a flying lap.

Now, if Alonso had let Massa pass him, he would not have had time to start the flying lap. Ferrari provided computer evidence to the FIA, saying that Massa would have been on the pole for the Grand Prix had Alonso not been there. Nonetheless, FIA Stewards stated that Alonso blocked Massa from pass him. Unfortunately, video replays shows that Alonso was over 100 yards ahead of Massa all the way around the track, and the fact the slipstreaming effect from Alonso was actually helping Massa! So what we have here is some clown trying to pass the blame on a poor performance on another. And for that, FIA Stewards is a finalist for this week’s chair.

The second finalist this week is the NFL and ESPN. As many readers may recall, I complained about the start-time for last week’s seasoning opener on Thursday. You know how I complained that an 8:15 pm start would prevent a lot of kids on the East Coast and Mid-West from seeing any of the game. Well, the NFL & ESPN went further and had a Monday Night game start at 10:15PM, eastern standard time.

What is the NFL & ESPN thinking? They should remember that famous word: KISS, which stands for Keep It Simple, Stupid. This simple phrase was NOT followed when the NFL agreed to have a game on at 10:15 pm.

Memo to the fools who are starting to run the NFL. Yo, the NFL became the biggest sports league in the world because things were kept simple. Everyone knew that football would be played once a week, on Sundays, at 1 pm. It was okay to add a special Monday Night game each week, especially if the game involved a good matchup. Things remained simple.

The NFL, however, started pushing the limits by adding a Sunday Night Game, but that to was still making things simple for the fans. But now? You got games on Thursday and Saturday nights, you got double headers on Mondays with one game starting after half the population has fallen asleep. You have added a level of complexity which is not necessary. And for what? Greed in the name of additional television revenue? NFL you are being warn, you are heading down the path MLB went down a few decades ago. Do you see where baseball is today? Is that the fate you want the NFL to have? There is still time to change. But, for this week, the NFL and ESPN are finalists for the Chair.

And now the Chair winner. . . .

The winner of this week’s Chair is none other than Mitch Cozad, the backup punter for Northern Colorado. Seems like young Mitch wanted to become the starting kicker, so he alleged visited the starting punter, Rafael Mendoza and stabbed him in his kicking leg. Now, it is one thing to earn the starting position by your play on the field. It is, however, another thing to win the job by shanking your competition. In the Year of the Arrested Player, this may be the most disturbing arrest of them all (although the Detroit Lions’ assistant coach getting busted for driving while naked is up there as well).

Folks, the sports world is heading to hell in a hand-basket. I am just hanging on because I want to see a Philadelphia sports team win a championship. However, I may abandon ship if crap like this continues (and expands) in the world of sports. One can only put with so much before they give up (or for the lunatics – go postal).

Until next Friday, amf!

To defend the NFL (why wuld I do this?) the Bolts-Raiders game that started so late for the Eastern Time Zone (a.k.a. center of the Universe) started at 7:15 for the local kids/fans of those teams... As for comparing the NFL to MLB, baseball is healthier than ever... attendances, revenues and ratings are higher than ever, the NFL has simply outgrown it's marketplace and lost fans like me who despise (the communism of) "parity".

I think Eddie "Pulling a" Griffin is still the most disturbing legal debacle of the year...

This has happened in England. All Football League games used to be held on Saturday, at 3pm. Now, in the Premiership, the 10 games have spread out... There's one on Monday night, three spread out on Sunday, another at 5:30 on Saturday night, one at 12pm on Saturday afternoon... You end up with four games being played at the "traditional time". It is solely for monetary purposes.
