It is Friday before a three-day weekend! However, the remains of Ernesto is fast approaching. So before I flooded away, lets gets on with the Friday Fryer and see who in the sports world gets the Chair for this week.
The first finalist is all the turkeys who argue that an MLB MVP must come from a playoff team. Folks, MVP stands for most valuable player. No where in this definition contains the phrase “of a playoff team.” Hence, there is no requirement that a league MVP must play for a playoff team.
The only requirement is that you have the best season of anyone in your particular league. I write this all because of the debate over Ryan Howard of the Philadelphia Phillies. Howard just cracked his 49th home run of the season. This home run set the Phillies all-time single season record for home runs. Mind you, there is still a month of baseball left. Howard, in the month of August batted, in 41 runs. This is, I believe, a MLB record. For the season, Howard has 128 RBI’s. He is also hitting at .299.
Ryan Howard is the sole reason why the Phillies are still in the Wild-Card race. If they do not make the post-season, it is not because of Howard but because of lack of pitching. Blaming Howard for poor pitching and denying him the MVP that he deserves is just stupid. Therefore, you turkeys with this train of thought get finalist status for the Chair this week.
Next finalist for the Chair is Terrell Owens of the Dallas Cowboys. Honestly, I am thinking of renaming the Friday Fryer Chair to the Terrell Owens’ Invitational Chair. This week, it is discovered that Mr. Owens was fined for skipping out or rehab and missing meetings with the Cowboys.
I stated last year that I wanted the Dallas Cowboys to sign T.O. because he will blow up his next team within a season, and there is no better team to do it to than the Cowboys. I was laughed at by many for making that statement. Guess who will be laughing last come October. Side note – I expect the Owens meltdown to occur after the game versus Philadelphia in early October.
And now for the winner of this week’s Chair. It is none other than Team USA Basketball. For the third straight international tournament, Team USA came up small. Yet again, Team USA did not make it the championship game.
This tournament once again shows the sad state of basketball in the United States: where it is all about the dunk and making it on ESPN Sportscenter and nothing about learning the fundamentals of the game. For this, Team USA basketball, and for that matter, basketball in general in the United States, gets to go old Sparky this week.
Until next Friday, AMF!
