A look at the sports week's biggest losers…
by Christof

Welcome to the latest edition of the Friday Fryer, where we take a look at who was the sports world's biggest idiot / loser this week. This week is a very special week for the Chair. Not very often doe we have an honorary executioner. But this week, we do! So without further ado, let’s go take a look at our three finalists and, of course, the person or team who is being dipped into the Fryer....

THE FINALISTS
Honorary Executioner – The Naval Academy
Normally, the Fryer mocks those that dishonor the world of sports. At times, however, the Fryer celebrates a winner. This is done by naming a team or person as the Honorary Executioner for the week. This doesn’t happen often, but this week it does.

The Honorary Executioner this week is the Naval Academy. They earn this by defeating Notre Dame in football this week. This is the first time since 1964 that Navy beat Notre Dame in football. Hence, after a forty-plus year losing streak, the Midshipmen deserve some praise.

So congratulations to the Naval Academy for beating Notre Dame. This win was long in the making, and hopefully will be repeated sooner than 43 years from now. No matter what, the Naval Academy is the honorary Executioner for this week’s Friday Fryer.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish
The Fighting Irish return to the Friday Fryer yet again. This week, Notre Dame lost to a very average Navy team. This is the first time that Navy has beaten Notre Dame in over four decades. The loss also leaves Notre Dame at 1-8 for the season.

Imagine that – a Notre Dame football team sits with a record of 1 win and 8 losses. Say it ain’t so, Charlie Weiss. The sad truth is that is exactly where Notre Dame is sitting. And things may get worse. Next up for Notre Dame is a game against Air Force. This is followed by a game versus Duke.

A loss of Duke will be the ultimate low point for the Notre Dame program. It will also earn the Irish another Friday Fryer appearance. But that is for a later time. Now is the time to enjoy this week’s nomination!

Eric Lindros
Eric Lindros retired from the NHL this week. When he first came into the league, he was considered to be the “Next One.” He had the physical tools to be one of the greatest players in hockey history. Yet, due to injuries and personal issues, he never came close to fulfilling his potential. For this, Lindros gets a Friday Fryer nomination.

Lindros played in 13 NHL seasons. He collected a total of 865 points. This includes scoring close to 400 goals during his career. Lindros, however, never won a Stanley Cup. During the last few years of career, he also drifted from team to team. First from New York to Toronto and then to Dallas.

Lindros was hurt by several concussions he received while playing for the Philadelphia Flyers. Those concussions changed the way he played the game, for the negative. Further, Lindros had off the ice issues that involved his over-bearing parents and the Flyers organization. The combination and injuries leading to diminish production and off the ice began the long, slow decline that his career suffered through.

This is truly sad, for many great things were expected from Lindros. In the end, Lindros had a good career. Not a great career, and definitely one that is not Hall of Fame worthy. Sadly, the potential was never reached for Lindros. For this sad fact, Eric Lindros earns a Friday Fryer nomination this week.

AND THE LOSER IS . . .
Mike Golic
Golic was a NFL player. His position was on the defensive line. Today, Golic is a national sports talk host. He has this job based on his days in the NFL.

It was sad to hear today that Golic admitted to using steroids on his radio show. For using steroids, Golic earns the Friday Fryer Chair this week. Naval Academy, strap in Golic and flip the switch.

One of the many teams that Golic played for was the Philadelphia Eagles. I had the opportunity to watch Golic play. He was a solid player, nothing special. He was also a member of the great Eagles defenses of the early 1990’s.

This must now raise the following question – who else on that dominant defense juiced up? If the answer is more than Golic, then the Eagles defense was a fraud built on a lie.

It is getting tougher and tougher for me to follow professional sports. The money and the cheating has not only lessen the level the play, it has cheapened it as well. Mike Golic is a symbol of this cheapening. Therefore, Mike gets the Friday Fryer Chair this week.

Until next Friday, AMF!

I think it is www.joesportsfan.com which talks about Mike and Mike. I think they say it best with: "We get it, one is fat and one is gay" (THAT IS A QUOTE!!!!)

He said willingly and without being forced that he tried steroids for 6 weeks in an offseason. That's unfortunate, but I have respect for it that he willingly admitted to doing it, and that it was for a short period of time. He actually said that he thought they had a negative effect on him, so he quit.

To get the chair for this is kinda wrong. Isn't this what we all say we want in baseball? For the players to confess and move on? Didn't we reward Giambi with the comeback player of the year award for this?

Again, steroids are bad. But I feel that what Golic did is nothing more than an experiment with something he was unfamilar with. Does it excuse it? No. Does it at least put it in a different light than had he not come clean? Yes.

I'll borrow this line from Quiz Show (great movie if you have never watched it) Congressman Derounian: I'm happy that you've made the statement. But I cannot agree with most of my colleagues. See, I don't think an adult of your intellegence should be commended for simply, at long last, telling the truth.

I knew Lindros was going to get fried this week. The only question left now is where he ranks among the biggest disappointments in sports history.

The way Lindros' career turned out was a disappointment, but not him. His problems were injury related, not performance. 845 points ain't too shabby either. Next weeks winner, the Minnesota Vikings.

Lindros is the J.D. Drew of hockey -- as an amateur, he was proclaimed to be a future superstar, but refused to sign with the team that drafted him (such a sad day for Colorado, who only used that trade to win multiple Cups), and turned out to be an incredibly brittle player who couldn't lead a Brownie troop. At least Drew has some time to maybe turn his career and reputation around, but Lindros is done, and his legacy will always be that of a concussion-prone baby who spent his time feuding with Bob Clarke (the greatest hockey player in Philadelphia history) instead of leading the Flyers to a championship.

That is an excellent comparison. But Drew got his ring, Lindros did not.

It should've really been Mark W Anderson for wasting time.

Every amateur hockey player since the mid-80's has been stuck with a tag no one will ever meet...the next Wayne Gretzky. Because there will never be another Wayne Gretzky. Right up to today with Sidney Crosby, young, 17-18 year old junior players are put on a pedestal they can realistically never climb.

And that is not their fault. Lindros may have gotten the best out of his talent he physically could have, which was 845 points. But when every wannabe hockey expert thinks he'll score 1800 points, its a disappointment if he doesn't, regardless of the reason.

Its the same syndrome in other sports, for 20 something years every Yankee outfielder was supposed to be Mickey Mantle. When the Yankees first brought up Bobby Murcer, Mantle was still active. He was supposed to be his heir apparent, blah, blah, blah. Well, he wasn't. Murcer had three career top ten finishes in batting average, a handful of top five's in a few other categories, yet he was considered a failure and was traded when he was 28 years old. The guy went on to play 1700 major league games and was a disappointment? And that's the player's fault?

And I agree with Davis that Lindros was a pussy, but Mario Lemieux was a bigger one.

"Mario Lemieux was a bigger one." What? What?! What in the -- ? I’m sorry. Are you fucking KIDDING me??!! Lemieux came back from cancer, for god's sake! He started the 1992-93 season with a massive lead in the scoring race, left at midseason for motherhumping chemotherapy treatments, and returned in time to not only catch Pat LaFontaine, but dominate him in the Art Ross race. He also led the Pens to two Cups. Mario Lemieux a pussy, are you kidding me? I hope that was some kind of sick joke. Unbelievable...
