A look at the sports week's biggest losers…
by Christof

Welcome to the latest edition of the Friday Fryer, where we take a look at who was the sports world's biggest idiot / loser this week. Due to some computers issues that I am currently experiencing, the Friday Fryer is a few days late this week. My apologies. So without further ado, let’s go take a look at our three finalists and, of course, the person or team who is being dipped into the Fryer....

THE FINALISTS
The New York Knicks
It has taken a while, but the Knicks have finally earned a Friday Fryer nomination this year. This comes off of the Boston Celtics game, where the Celtics won, 104-59. Yes, the Celtics nearly doubled the Knicks output.

The great mystery among Knicks fans is how does Isaiah Thomas still have a job. After years of poor general managing, followed by a less than stellar coaching season, followed by a sexual harassment suit, the man still has a job. Thomas must have some awesome photos of someone doing something that he is not suppose to be doing!

Anyway, the Knicks are truly awful. Heck, they are more awful than the Philadelphia 76ers. That says a lot, enough for a Friday Fryer Chair nomination.|}

Brett Favre

Favre has played in nine games against the Dallas Cowboys in Texas Stadium. All nine games were losses for the Green Bay Packers. The latest one occurred this past Thursday. And this game earned Favre a Friday Fryer nomination.

Favre did not play the entire game. In the second quarter, Favre was hit on an interception. On the hit, Favre looked to have injured his throwing elbow. After the game, it was reported that Favre also dislocated his non-throwing shoulder. Ouch.

The Packers lost the game to the Cowboys, which pretty much assures Dallas of home field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs. The injury that Favre received in the game may also end his consecutive playing streak. Maybe it is time for Favre to finally hang up the cleats. Nevertheless, Favre performance and injury in Thursday’s game earned him a Friday Fryer nomination this week.

Sean Taylor
Is he just another statistic? Taylor was shot and killed in what looks to be an attempted robbery of his home in Florida this week. Taylor has become the second NFL player killed via a shooting this year. Dare I say he won’t be the last?

It is well documented that Taylor had some serious problems in the past. He got himself involved with people who were less than law-abiding citizens. This is a shame, for Taylor’s father was a policeman.

It is also clear that Taylor was trying to clean up his act. Taylor was engaged and had a baby daughter. Actually, both the girlfriend and baby were in the bedroom where Taylor was fatally shot. They were left unharmed.

Murder is becoming more and more common these days. People can easily put to guns and say that is the big problem. These people would be wrong. The real problem lies with the lack of respect for human life. Making guns illegal will not increase respect for human life. More than likely, it would just making shootings that much “cooler” in popular culture. That is some sad commentary right there.

Nevertheless, Sean Taylor was killed this week at 24. His career and his life are over. And for what? Like I said, just another statistic.

AND THE LOSER IS . . .
Washington Redskins
Yep. The Redskins earn the Friday Fryer Chair award this week. Why? It is because they lost one of their players, not only for the season, but forever. The team is left to deal with the fallout of Sean Taylor’s murder.

Back in the day, it could be said that such a tragedy would bring a team closer together. For example, the Philadelphia Flyers lost their star goaltender, Pelle Lindbergh to a car crash in November of 1985. The Flyers responded by winning their division and making it to the NHL playoffs. Sadly, those were the days when money was not king in professional sports. It was a time when men still played a boy’s sport for the love of the game.

This is not the situation these days. Players now play for the multi-million dollars contracts, and not for the love of the game. This is why the level of play has diminished in all of sports over the past twenty years. This big money has also broken the bond within teams. Now, when adversity strikes, it is more likely the team will collapse, instead of excel.

This is where the Redskins find themselves. Adversity has struck them via the Taylor death. Will they pull together and win, or will they fall apart and lose. That question is still unanswered, though it is likely that the latter is going to be the case. Thus, the Friday Fryer Chair goes to the Redskins.

Until next Friday, AMF!

Favre gets hurt once this season and it's time to hang up the cleats? Pretty sure that loss didn't knock them out of the playoffs or anything.

Does it seem a little insensitive to anyone else having Sean Taylor and the Redskins as the week's biggest losers? I always thought the Friday Fryer was supposed to be funny and make fun of the biggest idiot/douchebag/dumbass in sports. The Redskins organization is going through a very tough time right now. I understand they literally were the biggest losers of the week, it just seems a little weird to have them on here. I probably took you too literally, but whatev.

I think having Sean Taylor up there is a touch indelicate, and unnecessary.

Looks like the Redskins were looking for 2 in a row with what happened today.

It is complete bullshit to list the Washington Redskin as "the world's biggest idiot/loser" of the week because of Sean Taylor's murder. And to attach a social commentary on the high salaries of athletes with "motivation" with respect to Taylor's death is equally a bullshit cheap hack ploy. I suggest the author of this drivel dip his own head in the fryer for a little perspective on such a highly sensitive matter to so many out there, especially to those that actually knew - and loved - Sean Taylor. RIP brother.

I think the Redskins should get a nomination for next week's fryer for trying to call timeout twice. But this week, it's not the right time to be calling them "losers" because one of their players was murdered.

Yea I have always read the Fryer as a thing of humor and being about people who fail at their jobs because of their own shortcomings, not because tragedy strikes. BTW I thought that the Redskins shoud win the opposite of the Friday Fryer because of the extremely classy move they made by starting that game with only 10 players on the field to honor Sean Taylor. That was truly awesome.

You could look at it another way. I took it to mean the Redskins were the biggest loser because they lost Sean Taylor.

Well said people. Sorry Christof, this is usually one of my favorite reads of the week, but I am disappointed to say the least.
