Friday Fryer (July 28, 2006)

Another week has come and gone, and now it is time to see who gets the Chair in the weekly Friday Fryer column.

Up first this week is a previous winner, the Cincinnati Bengals. This means another Bengal got busted by the police. Way to go boys! Will the Bengals have enough players not in jail to play Week 1? With training camp beginning, maybe the Bengals' head coach will be able to keep the players lock and key - they are use to that - and out of trouble.

We are staying in the NFL for the next contestant for this week's Friday Fryer Chair. This contestant is none other than the Player Who Holds Out. Yo folks, you are playing a kids game and you are getting paid millions to do so. Stop trying to suck the last dollar out and get to camp. Most of us wish we had half the athleticism as you boys have. Stop wasting the ability you got.

And now we move onto to the winner of the Chair. It is none other than the organization that puts on the Tour De France.

Let me make this clear for all to understand: Based on the information released, I do not believe that Floyd Landis took any performance enhancing drugs during this year's Tour De France. Now lets look at the facts.

First, Landis was tested at least six times during the Tour. Each stage winner, overall leader and two random riders are tested after each stage. Hence, Landis was, at the very least, tested after Stages 11, 12, 15, 17, 20, and 21. Now according to the Tour officials, only Landis' test after Stage 17 showed a high testosterone level. Yet no other test came back troublesome? At this point, is anyone else thinking that this situation is starting to sound a little fishy?

Second, the major performance enhancing drug in cycling is EPO. EPO, however, does not effect testosterone levels or the ratio between testosterone and epitestosterone. Testosterone levels and steroids are linked to building muscles and for lessening the recovery time for muscles. Hence, what is the logic for Landis to use steroids for a single day in the Tour, when it will do nothing for your body in this type of situation. Also, if he did use something, why did the testosterone level return to normal so soon after Stage 17?

Third, the B sample taken from Landis has yet to be tested. Wouldn't it be a hoot if this sample shows a normal ratio?

There are some negative trends in this world. Cheating is one such trend. Another is character assassination of an innoncent person. I am writing this for the world to see: Floyd Landis is in the latter situation.

Finally, the media also deserves the Chair this week. Actually, was it not for the Tour releasing the infomation of Landis' test, the media would have been given the Chair. Nice way to bury a guy for reporting, or misreporting, some facts involved in the situation!

When we are dead and buried, and future generations look back at this time in history, those future historians are going to have a field day ripping apart the world's media. Even though communications and information can now be broadcasted at rates never before seen, the quality of the news is getting worse, to levels never before seen.

Revenge and pushing one's agenda are the driving forces behind the media today. Facts are not important anymore, and they may be warped or totally ignored if they don't help with the agenda or revenge being promoted. This has been seen quite vividly in the general media over the last decade, and the sports section of the media has not been immune from it.

I whole-heartedly agree with your choice(s) this week. Even if, and hopefully so, the 'B' test comes back negative, the general public will still think of it as a tainted win.
