Happy mid July folks. It is Friday, the temperature outside is over 90. And now, it is even going to get hotter for someone, for he or she is about to go the Chair for their actions in the world of sports this week.
First contestant this week is Zinedine Zidane. Mr. Headbutter himself. Got himself throw out of the World Cup finals match because an Italian player talked smacked to him. Little Zidane has a fragile ego I guess, however, his actions did not directly cost France the championship. So he gets spared the Chair.
Next up is a former winner of the Chair, the Cincinnati Bengals. Yep, the Bengals this week selected Ahmad Brooks in the NFL Supplemental Draft. Mr. Brooks was kicked off his college team because of disciplinary problems. Why did the Bengals make this selection? Because Odel Thurman will likely be suspended four games for drug use. Brooks will fit in well with the other Bengal problem children, including Chris Henry, A.J. Nicholson, Frostee Rucker and Fahu Tahi.
Finally, it is time to announce the winner of the Chair. This goes to...Bill Giles, the man who killed baseball in the Greater Philadelphia Region. Mr. Giles brought together a group of blue-bloods who purchased the Philadelphia Phillies in 1981. Since that time, the team has made the playoffs twice, 1983 and 1993. Mr. Giles in the past has claimed that Phils could not go after free-agents because the team was in a small-market. Mind you, Philadelphia is the 5th larget market in the United States.
Bill Giles does not get the Chair for the past, although he does deserve it for his previous actions. Mr. Giles gets the Chair this week for interview at the All-Star game. Yes, the one where Mr. Giles said that Brett Myers was only helping out his wife the night he allegedly beat her on a Boston street corner. Nice job, Bill!
Mr. Giles did not stop there. He referred to fans who call in sportstalk shows as crazy and that the media is orchestrating all of the negative news about the Phillies organization. Bill, I hate to break it to you, but when the club has not made the playoffs in 12, make it, 13 years, and for its history, it is closing in on 10,000 losses - the negative news comes from how the Phils play the game.
And what may be most horrifying about what Bill Giles said was the comment that the Phillies will not be sold as long as he is alive. Giles is 71 years old, a bit senile, but in pretty good overall health. Hence, Phillies fans, the last few hundred that are still alive, will be suffering for many years yet to come.
And for that, Bill Giles gets the Friday Fryer Chair for July 14, 2006.
