a look at the sports week's biggest losers
by Christof

Ho, ho, ho and a bottle of rum! Welcome to another edition of the Friday Fryer. The weekly Fryer takes a look at who was the sports' world's biggest idiot this week. Without further ado, let's go take a look at our three finalists and, of course, the person or team being dipped into the Fryer....

THE FINALISTS
AND THE LOSER IS . . .

Lo Angeles Galaxy
The LA Galaxy of the MLS announced this week that they signed European soccer stat David Beckham to a 5 year contract that is reportedly worth up to $250 million. Beckham is 31 years old.

May I ask a stupid question – when did the MLS become a major sports league in the United States? Was I sleeping and missed this or something? Or is it the truth that the MLS is not a major league sports in the US? Survey says – the latter!

If the MLS is not a major sports league and does not have a massive television contract, why on earth would a team pay a single player, who is over the age of 30, $50 million a year to play for it? The answer to this last question is stupidity. That is what the LA Galaxy did, and as they and the rest of the MLS sink into red ink and oblivion, the only ones they can blame are themselves. For this stupidity, the L.A. Galaxy get the first nomination for the Friday Fryer Chair this week.

Barry Bonds'
Here is a shocker - baseball player Barry Bonds flunked a drug test during the 2006 MLB season. No, Barry did not get busted for testing positive for steroids, Barry is NOT that stupid. Instead, Bonds tested positive for speed.

Folks, Barry Bonds has a good chance of breaking the all-time MLB record for career home runs in 2007. This is the same Barry Bonds that have used performance- enhancing drugs, be it speed or steroids, to get close to the all-time record. By doing so, he has pretty much made a mockery of the historically sacred records found in baseball.

Barry Bonds is the co-poster boy of the Steroid Era in baseball. The damage that he and his generation have done to baseball is disgraceful. The damage is also permanent. For this, Barry Bonds gets a nod for this week’s Friday Fryer challenge.

Ohio State Buckeyes
BCS Championship Game Final Score: Florida Gators 41, Ohio St. Buckeyes 14. OUCH! That was not a championship game, it was a slaughter.

I do not know if Ohio State was overrated on not. I do not know if the fifty plus days between games played by Ohio State had a major impact. But, no matter what was the reason, Ohio State got wrecked in the championship game.

Overall, the bowl season once again left a lot to be desired for. I wonder if post-season games would be better if there was a playoff system. But that is another nominee for the Firday Fryer Chair. This week, the Ohio State Buckeyes get the nomination for their pathetic performance in the championship game this year.

Tony Romo

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is the winner of the Friday Fryer. The man many considered to be the Second Coming cost his team a chance to win the game last Saturday and advance in the NFC playoffs. One must wonder if Tony cared more about scoring on the field then off of it, then maybe the Cowboys, instead of the Seattle Seahawks would be preparing to face the Chicago Bears

For Philadelphia Eagles fans, the bobbled placement of the football for a field goal brought back memories of an 1997 Eagles-Cowboys Monday Night game. Just like last Saturday, it was the fourth quarter and the game could be won with a field goal. But, back in ’97, it was the Eagles who were going for it. The snap was fine, but Tommy Hutton could not place the ball, and Chris Boniol did not get the chance to win the game. The Eagles lost. Last Saturday night, the donkey of the play was not Tommy Hutton, but Tony Romo. But the result was the same for the Cowboys, a loss!

The image of Tony Romo after the bobble, with his hands on his helmet, and tears in his eyes, was the perfect exclamation point for the Dallas Cowboys season. Enjoy the off-season Cowboys! And for one more honor for you guys, Tony Romo gets the Friday Fryer Chair this week!

Until next week, AMF!

I'll look forward to seeing David Beckman in action!

It shows a lot for the popularity of football in the US, that an article with 9 votes as of this comment, and accessed 24 times, nobody has noticed the obvious error.

It's okay, I don't blame you Christof!

American football is really popular in the US. This European style of football, however, is not. Which is another reason why $250 million to Beckman is STUPID.

I just read this and I noticed it right away. It's just that I don't care too much for the MLS and neither David Beckman nor David Beckham is gonna get get me to watch.

I've been calling him 'Beckman' for a while (it's funny - in a 'Matt Linehart' kinda way)

I finally heard Beckman talk for the first time yesterday. Dude is toast in this country!

The more he calls it 'football', IN THE UNITED STATES, the lower the chances for success will be.

Maybe he can put a little bend into my 'Feetball' movement

and I say "he's toast" not because of what he said, but because of his dainty, flower-petal voice. He makes Dave Stewart sound like Barry White! I really don't care if he's 'pretty', but he sounds even "prettier"
