a look at the sports week's biggest losers
by Christof

Welcome to the Friday Fryer, where we take a look at who was the sports' world's biggest idiot this week. Winter continues to blast away, which is better late then never. So without further ado, let's go take at our three finalists and, of course, the person or team being dipped into the Fryer....

THE FINALISTS
Andy Reid
The Philadelphia Eagles head coach has had an outstanding career so far with the Eagle. As a matter of fact, he is having an Hall of Fame career. Although it is quite possible that Reid will make the Pro Football Hall of Fame, do not expect him to make the Father Hall of Fame.

This week, Reid’s two oldest sons, Garrett and Britt, were involved with situations with the police. One son was busted for getting into a car wreck and having drug paraphernalia on him. This son also admitted taking heroin on the day of the accident. The other son got busted for road rage. He also had drug paraphernalia on him.

A search warrant of Reid’s house performed after these incidents yielded some guns. You have to wonder whether the Reid’s kids favorite NFL player is Tank Johnson and their favorite team the Cincinnati Bengals. Any which way, Andy Reid has failed as a parent. Shame on him, and for that, he gets a Friday Fryer nomination.

Philadelphia Flyers
The Flyers initially earned the nomination for losing their 12th straight home game last night. The Flyers have not won at home since November 24, 2006. Ironically, team they last beat at home was coached by Ken Hitchcock, who started the NHL season as the Flyers head coach. The latest Flyers loss came at the hands of its long-time rival, the New Jersey Devils.

There are 41 home games for each hockey team in the NHL. This means that the Flyers have gone through a quarter of its home schedule without a victory. This is beyond embarrassing or historic. Actually, words cannot describe this mess.

Yet, the Flyers have already announced that John Stevens, the current head coach of the team, will be back next season. May I ask, what are they thinking? This team is the worse team is the history of the organization. John Stevens has done nothing, NOTHING, to stem the bleeding that defined this season. Yet, he is coming back for another go around?

Folks, if major changes are not made to the entire Flyers organization this off-season, it will be at least a decade, yes, a decade, before this team even a whiff of the NHL playoffs. For this, the Flyers get the second nod for this week’s Fryer.

Horse Racing
It is always depressing to see a champion athlete in his or her prime cut down because of injury. It is unspeakable when such an injury also leads to the end of the athlete’s life. This sadly occurred in horse racing this week, when Barbaro was put down.

I know many will say that this is only a horse. But this horse was used in an athletic event, one in which 95% of what is required to win comes from the horse itself. Therefore, a horse deserves to be considered a true athlete.

The horse racing circuit has had issues for many years. The loss of a great, undefeated champion like Barbaro in his prime does not help this situation. Hence, horse racing gets a nod for the Friday Fryer Chair.

AND THE LOSER IS . . .
The Two-Week Hiatus Between the Championship Games & the Super Bowl
May I begin by asking what is the purpose of having two weeks between the NFC and AFC Championship Games and the Super Bowl? To hype the game? I mean, it isn’t like tens of millions already planned to watch the game, either at home or at a friend’s party.

This two week is plainly stupid. Nothing positive can come out of it. The media either runs the same stories, over and over again, or asks the dumbest questions ever heard of (and that says a lot, especially with the mass media of today). The break does not help the teams, since the additional free time leads to problems and not benefits. And historically, the best Super Bowls are the ones played the Sunday after the championship games, not the one where there are a two-week break.

Anyway, after nearly two weeks of Super Bowl hype, and I am ready for the game to be over with, NOW. And lets face it, the Colts will have the game won by the end of the first quarter. So for making us painfully wait for the inevitable, the two week break gets the Friday Fryer Chair for this week.

Until next week, AMF!

I suppose the extra week allows players to get fit in time for the game that would have been doubtful if the game was brought forward a week.

Don't moan about the Flyers losing 12 straight home games. Consistency is the mark of a great team!

Yup yup yup. Devs win...all in a day's work. Gotta put the flyas in their place, and we all know which place that is too (burried far under a steaming pile, not to mention they're far in last place in the entire league let alone the Eastern conference). I thought it'd be difficult to reak more than the Boston Bruins have been doin lately, but the Flyers are reakin it up with style! Keep up the good work.

Well, the NFC and AFC championship games are a throwback to the original incarnations of the leagues pre-unification. I think their existence is appropriate and should be ensured. And in regard to the bye week, I think it's great for players to get some time off to rest up before they come back and beat the crap out of each other. It's the least they've earned. Besides, you don't want to watch a championship game with bruised, battered, and broken lame players not quite performing their best.

I am an NFC fan. I am use to watching games with bruised, battered and broken lame players every week.

Plus, not to mention, it gives some players additional time to pop roids and down painkillers. Speaking of which, does the NFL have a policy in regard to testing players participating in the superbowl or at least members of the winning team? I know, in most sports, winning athletes (ie., with last years mess in the Tour de France) have mandatory drug testing.
