Friday Fryer (December 1, 2006)

a look at the sports week's biggest losers
by Christof

Welcome to another rocking edition of the Friday Fryer, where we take a look at who was the sports' world's biggest idiot this week. After taking a week off for Thanksgiving, we have several potential winners for the Chair award this week! Without further ado, let's go take at our three finalists and, of course, the person or team being dipped into the Fryer....

THE FINALISTS
Albert Pujols
Talk about sore winners. Prince Albert is enjoying his World Series championship by complaining that only players on teams that make the playoff should be awarded the regular season MVP award in baseball.

Prince Albert is complaining because he finished second in the MVP vote to Ryan Howard of the Philadelphia Phillies. The Phillies did not make the playoffs, however, they did have more wins than Prince Albert’s St. Louis Cardinals.

Many may forget that fact, especially Prince Albert. The Cardinals, however, were in epic crash mode during the last 6 weeks of the regular season. But for the Atlanta Braves beating the Houston Astros on the final day of the season, there would have been a one-game playoff between the Astros and Cardinals for the right to go to the playoffs. But, I guess, Prince Albert forgets that little problem, and for his comments this week, he gets a nod for the Friday Fryer Chair.

Plaxico Burress'
Plaxico does not have the athletic ability of Randy Moss, but he sure does have his heart, or lack thereof. The New York Giants wide-receiver has a history of taking plays off, especially those plays where his QB throws an interception.

Plaxico lack of effort in the Giants-Titans game began the Titans historic comeback. Now, the Giants play the red-hot Dallas Cowboys. The winner of that game will likely take the weak NFC East division, while the loser will likely be sitting at home, watching the NFL playoffs at home. Therefore, Plaxico, for his heartless play, gets the second nomination for the weekly Chair.}

NFL Network
Yes, the NFL Network has begun showing live NFL games on Thursday nights. How many of us, however, get the NFL Network? Dare I say not many? Dare I say that I would be right.

Greed is good. Greed propels innovation and increases the standard of living for us humans. Irrational greed, however, is stupid and leads to failure and collapse. Irrational greed is where the NFL is heading, and heading fast.

Yo NFL, people care about football because of the game, which is getting worse, quality wise, every year, and the fact that the schedule is easy to follow. Actually, it WAS easy to follow. Now, there are games on Sunday afternoons, Sunday nights, Thursday nights, and soon, Saturday afternoon and Saturday night.

And to make matters worse, you stick Thursday night games on your own cable network. This network, however, is not available to most, because the NFL and the cable companies cannot come to agreement over the subscription price for the station. I am not one for government intervention, but can we get a Department of Justice investigation on an Anti-Trust violation here. If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, then, by golly, it is a duck. Same goes with monopolies and anti-trust violations. And folks, the NFL and NFL Network are quickly becoming the latter.

AND THE LOSER IS . . .

Michael Irvin

The winner this week is the biggest mouth-piece on ESPN currently. Boy, I am surprised that it has taken this long for Michael Irvin to get the Friday Fryer Chair.

Well, Mr. Irvin gets the Chair for not being a [[Terrell Owens] enabler or for his previous drug use. It is for his racial statements he made over the last few weeks. It seems that Mr. Irvin believes that only players with a black ancestry can be a good player in the NFL today. At least, that is what he said in regards to a question about new Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo.

The fact that Irvin was not even suspended for his comments shows what kind of double standard there is in the United States. Lets face it, if a white guy made a comment on par with Irvin’s, he would have been fired within hours. Yet, Irvin is still employed.

Look, race is still an issue in America, and will continue to be one as long as there are double standards around for any race- really there is only one race, the human race, but that is topic for another time. Anyway, Michael Irvin is just the latest example of the double standards in America. And for that, Irvin gets the Friday Fryer Chair.

Until next Friday, AMF!
